2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary to BLM protesters : "I'm going to keep talking..."
Her supporters cheer.
In the diary, some of her supporters are criticizing BLM for daring to protest her. Very different from what happened to Sanders with BLM shutting down him speaking at a Social Security event.
We all know how Sanders and his supporters have been attacked for the last month for that. The double standard is completely ridiculous.
Sanders has met with BLM plenty of times, but somehow Hillary saying "I'll be happy to meet with you later" seems to count more.

(70,239 posts)blm a week (about) to release the information (they released a video last time). This time it was one--or two? women who were yelling from the back area. I do not have a clue.

(30,741 posts)not Sanders.
However, the conspiracy theories were hilarious. I am still laughing over who was really "behind" the alleged attacks on Bernie. As if black people cannot think or act for themselves!
jfern
(5,204 posts)that protested Sanders was called "Outside Agitators" was kind of an invitation for conspiracy theories.

(70,239 posts)4 yr cousin has something different or bigger or nicer than he does. Or he loses a game to his cousin. i.e. I hear--he has more milk than me. ....he has a bigger piece of bacon. It goes on and on. But I excuse--he is four and is learning.
jfern
(5,204 posts)Sanders was attacked even though his protesters got plenty of time to speak. Hillary's didn't get to speak, and she's not being attacked.

(7,906 posts)I don't care who feels attacked. The message needs to be in the forefront.
jfern
(5,204 posts)And Sanders never said otherwise.
KMOD
(7,906 posts)the least of my concerns.
Black Lives Matter!
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)They acted like it was the end of the world and some said Clinton was behind it.
jfern
(5,204 posts)Obviously it wasn't the end of the world and they've shown they can protest Clinton too. However, they didn't shut down her speaking. Sanders had events that weren't his that he was speaking at, and no Secret Service to stop people, so it affected him a lot more.
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)And the police asked Sanders if he wanted the protestors removed and he said no.
jfern
(5,204 posts)But he clearly listened to them a lot more than Hillary did today.
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)As a presidential candidate you have to think on your feet and he didn't.
jfern
(5,204 posts)So she was quite dismissive
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)I think both of them could do a better job at addressing racial discrimination.
jfern
(5,204 posts)He just met with the Charleston SC BLM
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/08/28/1416265/-Bernie-Sanders-met-with-Black-Lives-Matter-Charleston-SC
He has a racial justice issue section.
https://berniesanders.com/issues/racial-justice/
And he's meeting with DeRay Mckesson and others to improve it.
Of course no one is perfect.
hrmjustin
(71,265 posts)Now tell us why we would want to elect a President who can be bullied by three ordinary US citizens.
jfern
(5,204 posts)It was a Social Security event that he was speaking at, and when the organizers declared the event over, there was nothing for him to do but leave.
And the idea that this makes him unqualified for President is absurd. This would never have happened to Hillary because of her Secret Service. And you know who else has Secret Service? The President.
His performance at Netroots and the Social Security venue does not bode well for his facing down Putin or the junta in Beijing.
Using your word, Hillary was not "bullied" today. I hope she did meet with the protesters afterward. Yet another transwoman has been killed, this one in San Antonio.
And here's where we differ. You're concerned about Sanders. I'm concerned about transwomen and PoC shot down by trigger-happy cops.
jfern
(5,204 posts)And ignored what they had to say? You seem like someone who will attack Sanders no matter what he does.
okasha
(11,573 posts)I want a competent President, someone who can handle the unexpected, who can respond firmly to opposition and yet leave communication open, someone who knows how to negotiate. That's not Sanders' skill set.
jfern
(5,204 posts)for both not listening and being too accommodating. Hillary supporters certainly weren't attacking Sanders for being too accommodating before her recent incidents with them. And Hillary doesn't even have a racial justice position, so it's not like she's negotiated anything there.

(10,287 posts)I hope everyone got what they wanted from blm
Thanks to the disingenuous of some on both sides trying to score points this is where we are
A bunch of white people arguing over what they don't know anything about
I say this as a person who's lives.havent mattered since we allowed y'all to dock here.
KMOD
(7,906 posts)That's pretty much it, and I'm quite embarrassed and ashamed by it.
SwampG8r
(10,287 posts)As I am one of those.people who isn't being alert stalked no we swear.no one would do that on du
Last time I signed in to du I replied.to.2 posts and both were alerted
1/1 and the one hidden was borderline so no hard feelings
Of all the posters chewing the meat from blm's bones.you are almost the only one here who truly speaks for them in a way that would make them proud.
As I applaud their goal I applaud your consistency on this issue.
While others have used it as a cudgel to beat a true Allie.of.civil.rights and others have diminished its purpose by supposing motives not in evidence.
But you stay on the point and I applaud you for it.
It's very important to me as well.
Black Lives Matter. The movement is finally getting the attention it deserves. It's our current civil rights movement, and we need to stand by it and keep it in the spotlight. The message is much more important than any politician.
SwampG8r
(10,287 posts)But I think my folks are gonna buy it back a quarter at a time. And let them provide the quarters.
Just look at the sorry pissing contest in the subthread under your first comment
Do either of us give credence to supportive claims from either side when political posturing is the only goal? Who up there do you see as sincere in their support beyond this as a tool to beat those they have chosen to see as enemies?
What you are doing counts more than all their posturing combined
I just hope you can continue to separate it from whichever candidate you hope for
KMOD
(7,906 posts)Scratch that, it not only bothers me, it shocks me. We clearly have a very long way to go, but I'm going to do whatever I can to keep the message out there. Black Lives Matter. Enough is enough. No more backburner for this. Let's keep it in the forefront, no matter what it takes.
SwampG8r
(10,287 posts)As I said I am a Sanders supporter
When blm did Bernie I was proud
He was respectful of what they were doing
He understood you go where the crowd is which is what blm was doing following him, ain't no one else with a crowd as big as Bernie's.
He knows this....in politics the squeaky wheel gets the goddamn grease, because he has been that squeaky damn wheel
My hope is blm becomes part of his traveling show with a chance to organize and network with the great people who come to his events.
It kills me a little to see Democrats fighting over who has been more inconvenienced instead of addressing the real issues
KMOD
(7,906 posts)addressing the real issues.
Yup! Very much agreed.
I'm also disgusted with the belittling of the Black Lives Matter movement in general. It is a real issue.
JI7
(89,250 posts)but her supporters are not reacting in the same way some sanders supporters did.
it wasn't about just not liking what they did at the protest itself. it was the conspiracy theories , lecturing black people about what is best for them and just overall ugly reaction.
if it was just about not liking the protest itself and criticizing it and even disagreeing with it then it wouldn't have been as big an issue.
jfern
(5,204 posts)And for various reasons, they didn't end up on the stage like Sanders' protesters did. So they didn't affect her as much. It did feel a bit like he was being targetted. Sanders is the strongest progressive candidate in decades.
I agree that if people were just talking conspiracy theories or lecturing black people, that's a problem. But it seems like there were many using BLM just as something to attack Sanders with. It was fitting the existing narrative of him not having much black support.
JI7
(89,250 posts)yes, there were many hillary supporters who exploited the issue for themselves .
but many of the black people (whether or not they supported hillary) were turned off by it because of attacks on them personally.things like going on black twitter and other black sites and telling them what is best for them.
jfern
(5,204 posts)telling everyone what was best for them? As opposed to saying that Sanders was being attacked unfairly?
JI7
(89,250 posts)the one who got it worst on DU was a black poster who had been critical of Hillary for months and said she would actually support sanders.
They were condescending, obnoxious and tone deaf to the issues of Black Lives Matter.
You can read it for yourself in this group and the African American group. Look for threads around that time period and read all the posts.
