Biden's efforts in 2005 were no anomaly. Though the vice president has long portrayed himself as a champion of the struggling middle class -- a man who famously commutes on Amtrak and mixes enthusiastically with blue-collar workers -- the Delaware lawmaker has played a consistent and pivotal role in the financial industry's four-decade campaign to make it harder for students to shield themselves and their families from creditors, according to an IBT review of bankruptcy legislation going back to the 1970s.

Joe Biden bears a large amount of responsibility for passage of the bankruptcy bill, Ed Boltz, president of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, said in an interview with IBT.

I like Uncle Joe, but this is a bit problematic.
Thoughts? I'm a bit dumbfounded.

(14,881 posts)We can also thank him for Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court (and the horrible treatment of Anita Hill in the process). And he voted in favor of the Iraq War.
He has a 5th big strike against him...it eludes me at the moment.

(14,881 posts)In 1984, he worked with Republican Sen. Strom Thurmond and the Reagan administration to craft and pass the Comprehensive Control Act, which enhanced and expanded civil asset forfeiture, and entitled local police departments to a share of captured assets. Critics say this incentivizes abuse, citing countless cases of unfair and unaccountable seizures .
In 1986, Biden co-sponsored the Anti-Drug Abuse Act, which created new mandatory minimum sentences for drugs, including the infamous crack-vesus-cocaine sentencing disparity .
Biden would also play an important role in crafting the 1988 Anti-Drug Abuse Act, which strengthened mandatory minimums for drug possession, enhanced penalties for people who transport drugs, and established the Office of National Drug Control Policy, whose director was christened drug czar by Biden.
His broadest contribution to crime policy was the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, commonly called the 1994 Crime Bill. Written by Biden and signed by President Clinton, it increased funds for police and prisons, fueling a huge expansion of the federal prison population .t also contributed to the rapid growth of militarized police forces that used new federal funds to purchase hundreds of thousands of pieces of military equipment .

(35,568 posts)Frankly, I want Biden to run because the overwhelming majority of Bernie's supporters are so issues-oriented they they're not, we're not budging, and this will only peel more votes from Hillary.
Like Uncle Joe below said, thanks for the thread. This is how we learn from each other.
