MSNBC: Clinton to Dunham: If you cant get excited, be pragmaticClinton went on to urge young women to not get turned off by the negativity and nastiness that is unfortunately too much in our politics today.
You kind of can cut through that and say, look, I not only have a right, I have an obligation to make a choice. Thats part of the service I pay for living in our country. So Im going to vote for X or Y. Not because I think that person is perfect, but its going to be better than the alternative. If you cant get excited, be pragmatic and do it anyway, Clinton said.

(403 posts)Besides being an excellent president, I think electing Obama also served as a societal good. And I believe electing a Democratic woman to presidency will also serve as a societal good. Especially in this day and age of constant continued assaults on woman's rights, the objectification of women, and the rise of men's rights activists, etc. Electing a woman to presidency will inspire a nation who wants to believe "anything is possible" to actually fulfill that belief. Go Hillary!

(62,325 posts)It's always expected that they be Christian, go to Church on Sunday, have close relationships with prominent Christian pastors and or Evangelicals.
It would set the tone to change that if Bernie were elected. Don't think there would be too much of same old religious influences surrounding the WH. Another reason why they will do everything to stop him.

(3,233 posts)What is pragmatism to you? Checking your brain at the door before entering a voting booth?

(6,280 posts)As you can tell by many of the replies to your post, any Pro Hillary mention will rapidly devolve into a nasty, muckraking, juvenile cesspool. It's what many Bernie supporters do, it's how they roll. You'll get used to it There are adults in that group, but I have not seen many who make an attempt to curb the vitriol. Shame.

She was Elizabeth Warren before Elizabeth Warren.
We're plenty excited, Hillary. Just not for you.

(27,787 posts)I know a number of people who are not "excited" about voting, period.
And its not because of the candidates. Its because the government has become dysfunctional.
This has been a goal of the GOP. If they can get more and more voters to be discouraged, and stay home, the shrinking RW base maintains more influence than it should otherwise have.
So naturally, Democrats should help them in that endeavor.
Apparently.

(47,209 posts)I know loads of people who are so disgusted by politics they never really take much time to think about their votes. Especially when they are young and "idealistic".
They want a rock star, lol.... But ask too many people who are interested in politics are partisan assholes and they don't even want to get into it with them.
Young people don't vote, then they moan and groan about the state of the world. It would be awesome if attitudes change in this country and more good people felt an obligation to vote. It's great advice.

(89,252 posts)and based on this site some would think there are only presidential elections and a few senate , governors etc which get big media attention.
but there are local and other small level elections going on all the time.
and i personally find voting boring. like a chore having to fill out paperwork.
so what she says is correct. if you care about the issues these things matter and level of excitement should not matter.

(47,209 posts)disengagement we have. You see it here, with people expecting the POTUS to be a superhero and turning on him for not being all powerful- it feels like an ugly game show or something.

(58,785 posts)We would either have to amend the Constitution to limit terms or examine what good behavior is. Or both.
Notably, I just looked it up, and the first cluster of justices served less than 8 years each. After that, before the medical revolution, they averaged 12. Since 1975 they've averaged 25 years (!!!!), and that is expected to continue to rise. Especially with the GOP's determination to defeat demographic realities at the polls by appointing younger judges. Like Clarence Thomas, a bundle of character and personality deficits that promised to keep him the court's most intractable, conservative member.

But, personality interferes greatly with intellect, which seems to always be the case in extremists, as well as the sort of people who are easily distracted by frequent petty resentments. He seems to completely lack "judicial temperament."
What I meant by reexamining "good behavior" would be to consider if decisions that varied too far from the tenor of the times and the will of the people, as well as from previously established law, constituted bad behavior. The conservatives on the court have learned they can be be activist from previous more liberal courts, the difference being those previous activist courts reflected changes in greater societal attitudes, while the conservatives on this one are determined to impose their will on society to create a new reality.

the nastiness and become pragmatic?
Whose negativity? Whose nastiness?
