Hillary Clinton Ties Herself to Francis on Climate ChangePope Francis may not be a Democrat, but Democrats certainly love Pope Francis. And during his trip to the United States, theyre evidently trying to get a boost from his popularity. On Friday, presidential nominee Hillary Clinton appeared in an unlikely media outlet, the National Catholic Reporter, with a Francis-themed op-ed on climate change. For anyone whos followed Clintons campaign even a little bit, the rhetoric will sound familiar, even if the venue is new. As a person of faith, a mother, and a grandmother, I am deeply moved by Pope Francis recent teachings on climate changeto reflect and above all to act, she writes. We are rich, powerful, and blessed with many advantages. We must lead the charge.
Clinton was beaten to the pages of NCR by her Catholic competitor, Martin OMalley. His pope-full op-ed on climate change, which also touched on poverty and the migrant crisis, ran a few days ago, right before Francis arrived in the U.S. And just to round things out, Bernie Sanders did his own round of pope praising on Thursday after the pontiff addressed Congress. The name Dorothy Day has not been used in the United States Congress terribly often, Sanders told The Washington Post. She was a valiant fighter for workers, was very strong in her belief for social justice ... This would be one of the very, very few times that somebody as radical as Dorothy Day was mentioned.
Lots of pope posturing going on. Times have changed since JFK.
JFK's Speech on His Religion
I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish; where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source; where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials; and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all.
I agree that the current pope is progressive on some issues and I'm happy if that moves his followers in a certain direction. Still, all the pope love is feeling a little too cozy. JFK's speech was to combat anti-Catholic prejudice, but I think it's good advice even outside of that context.

(45,319 posts)equal rights because of this faith she cites for many many years and every time she did that I trusted her less and less. Dragging up all that faith and family talk is not helpful. Dog whistle city.
And while I get Dorothy Day was great in many ways, fact is a person gave me a book about her years ago in in the first minutes of reading she said she was 'repulsed by homosexuals'. I was 19 and I did not read any more. That's also part of her package. Sanders also sent me a 'why you have to listen to the Pope' email. I've been a climate activist and actual full total equality activist my entire adult life, I do not need instruction from anti gay and anti choice clergy that opposes my best interests. It is insulting to tell me I have to listen to some anti gay preacher.
This whole week has just left me liking all of our candidates and our Party much, much less.

(45,319 posts)Look, I've supported Bernie since most people had never heard of him. I did not care for his email telling me I had to listen to the anti gay Pope. I listen to science about climate and economists about the economy, not preachers who say my rights are from the devil. That email was not nice to see in my inbox.
Sorry. For me support of a candidate is not exclusive of criticism of that candidate. Anyone who promotes an anti gay activist to me will get my stern criticism.
Leave your preachers out of the politics please. Especially those who are exclusionary and call minority groups a threat.

(11,945 posts)The cruelty, exclusion, and gay bashing are abominable, on a par with fascism and slavery. People can be beasts, but even the animals aren't that cruel. Yes, it is horrible, and it hurts.
I wish the Pope could come out and defy the Church on core doctrine, but this human institution was not founded on the spirit of inclusion that Jesus, St. Francis, and Pope Francis represent. The pope cannot challenge doctrine and still be a Catholic. However, however, I think we do see his true feelings when he says, of LGBTs, "who am I to judge?" I took that as code. It fits all the non-doctrinal statements of love and inclusion that he has been allowed to make. I am sure that he abhors judgmentalism, as he should.
Bernie, of course, is taken by the Pope's championing of the poor and the environment and his condemnation of greed. Bernie, like me, doesn't hold church doctrine against the pope. I think we both sense that he does not personally condemn LGBTs.
Doesn't take the pain away, I know. But as we both know, times are changing, people are opening their eyes and hearts to the humanity of those who once were considered "different."

Omg doesn't she know he calls capatilism "the dug of the devil"?? She is way off base writing this.
