2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHere's one: when was the last time the initial Democratic front-runner won the nomination?
Not counting an incumbent President or sitting VP.
Clinton was front-runner in 2008 and lost. Dean was front-runner in 2004 and lost. Tsongas in '92. Hart in '88. I guess Mondale in '84 was the last time? And he had been a VP not long previously.

I'm trying to remember. In early 2003 I thought Kerry would be the nominee, but Lieberman may have been leading the polls. His campaign ebbed and flowed, but he did end up winning.
