(47,803 posts)"Well, I am focusing on the fact that whether you're white or black or Hispanic or Asian, if you are in the working class, you are struggling to keep your heads above water. You're worried about your kids. ..... You should not be basing your politics based on your color. What you should be basing your politics on is, how is your family doing?.."
That's a call for unity and solidarity. It's a call for inclusiveness.

(18,115 posts)with a race baiting axe to grind. The full quote makes clear that Bernie was saying that while the Dems did well among all African Americans, including those who are working class, they did not do as well among white working class.
If the OP were here in good faith or had any decency, they would edit or self-delete. I won't hold my breath.

(26,117 posts)I don't think Democrats have made it clear that they will stand with working class people.

(30,481 posts)On a bright note we finally have a football coach calling football plays. I got texts from multiple people when we were losing on Saturday from people excited it appears we are getting back to football. Still going to be years. We spent the last couple of years tricking ourselves. Fun win over the weekend.

(10,287 posts)I can't give anyone promoting Hillary any credibility given what we have seen this week
NCTraveler
(30,481 posts)That I am anti-Semitic by a Sanders supporter.
And multiple supporters of his are going around this site calling POC racists.
Please note, not one single shred of evidence was offered. Just pathetic bombshells while the echo chamber pats them on the back for their ignorance.
That is just this week. Yet some posters for Hillary are what lends you to not give her supporters any credibility. It always amazes me how some come to their thoughts. Someone on the internet said this week, so my thoughts have changed. I find it to be impressive the words anonymous people on the internet have over others.

(47,803 posts)She was only chosen for a couple of public service posts because she is Sanders wife.
If someone said Hillary's only accomplishment was being married to Bill, that would also be sexist.

smh!!!
If I let the internet determine my thought process, I'd have flown that kite/jumped in that lake and a lot worse, by now!
When they run out of valid points to express, they fling invective.
The good aspect is this--if someone calls you a personal insult, you've won the argument. They're outta gas. The first sign of a failure to refute is to name-call.

(47,803 posts)Read the damned quote again.
Perhaps you disagree with that issue as a priority. Okay, fine, That's valid. But don't lie or misrepresent what he said.
cyberswede
(26,117 posts)He then said Democrats haven't made it clear they'll stand up for working class people (who come in all colors, of course).
It's clear that quote doesn't mean what you're implying it means. I also think you're fully aware of that, but you're more interested in stirring shit that in having a real discussion.

(36,223 posts)SANDERS: You're going into this - Steve, you're going into this demographic stuff, which I reject. That's not my cup of tea.
INSKEEP: Although, you talked about it.
SANDERS: Yes. Well, here's what you got. What you got is an African-American president. And the African-American community is very, very proud that this country has overcome racism and voted for him for president. And that's kind of natural. You got a situation where the Republican Party has been strongly anti-immigration. And you've got a Hispanic community, which is looking to the Democrats for help. But that's not important. You should not be basing your politics based on your color. What you should be basing your politics on is, how is your family doing?
And your point is well taken. In the last election, in state after state, you had an abysmally low vote for the Democrats among white, working-class people. And I think the reason for that is that the Democrats have not made it clear that they are prepared to stand with the working people of this country, take on the big money interest. I think the key issue that we have to focus on - I know people are uncomfortable about talking about it - is the role of the billionaire class in American society.
The entire exchange was in regards to his statements about the Democrats losing white voters.

In other words, let's work on what we have in common to solve the problems that affect us all.
That is not saying disregard issues related to race or ethnic origins or otehr facets of identity. Itls just saying we have to also work together on the big problems that affect us all. Overcome the politics of division that the GOP specializes in.
That "big tent" used to be a basic belief and goal of Democrats....But since Sanders entered the race, somehow that has become "wrong." Up is down.

(25,699 posts)Bernie Sanders is talking about the fact that white, working-class people tend to favor Republicans over Democrats, and how Democrats might go about reversing this.
Hillary Clinton was talking about how hardworking white Americans prefer her over the black man she was running against, and framed it as though only white americans were "hard-working."
You need to stop being disingenuous, Boston Bean.

(47,803 posts)Has the idea of a Big Tent for the Democratic Party suddenly become verboten?
That's what Sanders was saying. We need an inclusive movement among the working (middle and lower) class to transcend the politics of division the GOP specializes in.
What heresay.
NCTraveler
(30,481 posts)It just is. Just like blatant cronyism is different. Just like Sanders greatest legislative victory was opposing a pathway to citizenship for over ten million people over his economic concerns. These things are just different.

(29,257 posts)The construction of Hillary's sentence meant that hard working American = White Americans.
I don't know if you already understand this and are pretending you don't, or if you are actually incapable of understanding, but you are wrong, wrong wrong. They are not the same at all.
morningfog
(18,115 posts)They surely are not really so dumb that they don't understand the difference between "working class" and "hard working."
Working class white Americans as a voting block are distinct from working class African American voters. Bernie said the dems failed to bring in the white working class Americans. Hillary said Obama was not supported by hard working Americans. white Americans, distinguishing that non-whites were not "hard-working," regardless of their class.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)You are only allowed to parse the words of President Obama or candidate Clinton looking for phrases or sentences that can be painted in a negative light.
That seems to be the theme in many of the responses to your OP.
MADem
(135,425 posts)The unfortunate thing is, no one is taking that point, are they?
They're too busy expressing their own ire and hurt feelings to realize that this kind of exclusionary language CREATES hurt feelings in certain segments of the population--segments that Democrats cannot win without, who have been loyal, but who will stay home if they don't feel that a candidate will be responsive to their needs.
Instead of saying "Well, that was clumsy," and "That sounded like he's taking certain demographics for granted," and "He probably doesn't mean to sound like he's discounting or ignoring POC, but that is how he is coming across--that message needs massaging," they instead focus is on how MEAN the OP is being to Berrrrnie.
What a winning strategy!
