2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI can't stand guns. I hate gun violence. I support Bernie Sanders.
I wish Sanders felt more like I did about guns, but you know what? The reason I like him and trust him is that I already know he isn't going to change his tune because people like me want him to. He's going to continue to tell me and anyone else who cares to listen why his positions are what they are, and he won't be trying to curry political favor by changing his mind in the middle of election season.
That said, Sanders' position on guns just isn't that bad, and certainly does not rise to the level being pushed by some very dishonest people, and everyone reading this already knows that, whether they'll admit it or not. Sanders isn't a gun nut, and those who are trying to push that know better.

(20,043 posts)I saw my mom shot when I was little--domestic violence--and she's still alive. I know O'Malley isn't polling well right now, but that's who I like. I'm hoping he'll get a bump in the polls/more talk/name recognition after the debate.

(12,530 posts)I definitely don't like what happened in Baltimore under his leadership, but he has some solid ideas.
We are both supporting underdogs. Good luck to us both.

(227 posts)His past positions have been reasoned and he supports the three key feasible measures to reduce violence:
--Close the gun show loophole
--Instant and universal background checks
--Make straw purchases a federal crime
I am on the fence about assault weapons bans, unless he just means high capacity magazines, which makes sense.
Either way, he doesn't grandstand on it, he doesn't insist on his way no matter what; he knows that finding consensus is what will bring the most meaningful reform most quickly.
It's one of the many reasons I support his candidacy.
PS, one friend was shot during his graveyard shift at a convenience store.
The other friend ate his gun after coming back from Desert Storm and getting hooked on crank.

(12,530 posts)I am sorry to hear about your friends. I also shudder when I hear stories like your first story. In my younger years, I worked overnight at a convenience store. I was lucky. Thank you for the post.

That sucks. I'm glad you made it though your job-- dangerous work in many cities.

(5,213 posts)they would represent enormous leaps forward in gun policy in the U.S. Unfortunately I don't think Bernie or anyone else can for the time being--not that we shouldn't try and continue to push, but right now the gun crazies have a tight grip on the upper hand. If Sandy Hook couldn't budge gun policy what will?
