Washington (CNN)Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders says the federal budget deficit is a "serious problem" -- but he's not backing away from potentially pricey policy proposals.

In an interview with NBC's Chuck Todd set to air Sunday on "Meet the Press," the Democratic presidential contender said he'd pay for his plans -- including $1 trillion for infrastructure and a "Medicare for all" health insurance system -- through higher taxes on wealthy Americans and corporations that keep profits outside the country.

"You take a hard look at our tax system," Sanders said when pressed about how he'd address the deficit.

"And you say, 'You know what? Corporate America, you ain't going to stash your money in the Cayman Islands and not pay any taxes at all,'" he said. "If you are very, very wealthy, as Warren Buffett reminds us, you know what? You're not going to continue to pay an effective tax rate lower than middle class people."

Sanders pointed to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan "that our Republican friends got us into and forgot to pay for," as well as George W. Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy and for corporations, as the culprits for a national debt that has topped $18 trillion and increases each year.

Last I read Hillary had her proposals paid for (if you liked them or not is another matter).

If you missed how then it's unfortunate.

He explains some of the changes needed right there in the text that you posted, so it's pretty clear how we pay for these things.

And, these are investments that will have great returns, much unlike throwing money away in Iraq, or giving it away to global corporations.

He's the man with a plan.

We should have an income level above which the tax is 100%. There should be an absolute limit on income.

he is going after tax shelters offshore, making the obscenely wealthy pay their share, and getting us out of wars of choice in order to allow people to have quality education and health care,

this is going to be very popular. only the 1% ers and their minions will scream about the "unfairness" of higher taxes

edit...and i gave it a rec because it is such a great idea!! everyone needs to see this

All we need to do is get taxes back to what they were under St. Ronnie Reagan.

Frankly, I'd like to see them back to what they were under Eisenhower, but I'll settle for St. Ronnie.

from the 70% level it was in 1981. Meanwhile, he raised the lowest tax bracket from 14 to 15%. And of course, he raised FICA taxes, and capped the level of income subject to FICA tax.

as if by some insane magic.

She's got specific proposals regarding expanding the war in the ME. She hasn't got that "paid for". Not even by the Clinton Foundation. But other than that, which she's made herself so very clear on, she hasn't said too much about her plans. Except that she's not a sexist racist, like... ooo, those folk who don't like her politics.
