Republican VP candidate U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan in Villages Saturday

Republican VP candidate U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan in Villages Saturday

Vice presidential candidate-designate U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., will be speaking at a rally in The Villages Saturday morning.

An official with the Mitt Romney For President campaign confirmed that Ryan will be appearing at the Town Square, 1000 Lake Sumter Landing, sometime after 9:30 a.m.

The park will open to people at 7:30 a.m. and the pre-speech program begins at 9:30 a.m.

It will be Ryan’s first visit to Florida since Romney announced him as his choice to be his running mate on Saturday.

The sprawling 55-and-up community that spans parts of Sumter, Lake and Marion counties should provide a friendly Florida debut for Ryan in the 2012 presidential race. The Villages’ developers Gary and Rene Morse are big GOP supporters who signed on early to the Romney campaign, and the Village Square park has hosted almost every major Republican candidate, in front of enthusiastic, partisan crowds, for many years.

The square also is technically private property controlled by The Villages, so access is restricted. Last year when Democrats tried to enter the park to protest an appearance by Gov. Rick Scott, The Villages had Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies escort the protesters out.
