Unreal
PPP On Twitter
After all that Akin STILL leads McCaskill, 44-43. Little difference from our last poll which was Akin 45-44
75% of Missouri voters think Akin's comments were inappropriate, but they're still voting along party lines
Only 6% of Republican women say they're going to vote for McCaskill

(22,000 posts)The next poll will be a better gauge of where the race is at if Akin stays in. With the money drying up, I'd think his poll numbers will go south very very quickly.
I guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow and see what he does.

(2,090 posts)If Akin now stays in, do they dare support him? Do they dare NOT support him? What will Rove do?

(23,251 posts)...ditto RSCC. At least $$10million in GOP advertising evaporated today. That's HUGE in a Missouri race!

(5,842 posts)I would anticipate that if it looks like Akin can stay competitive even after this mess that the money will flow to him somehow.
At this point, what with the Republican platform basically supporting Akin and Ryan's stand on a full abortion ban the R's may as well just dig in and let the chips fall where they may.

(4,551 posts)And in a sense you've got to see it from Akin's point of view - why should he be raked over the coals when they're all basically saying the same thing? Why should he be thrown under the bus and not Paul Ryan and some of the others?

(13,992 posts)This douchebag is saying that if a woman gets pregnant, then it wasn't really rape. That she wanted it.
It's one thing to stupidly vote against your economic interests, but do these women have such low self-esteen that they can't find it in themselves to be offended by this crap?

If somebody said to me (as a guy) that god says that I should receive a swift kick in the nuts, my response would be, "God? What God? Never heard of him."

(904 posts)I'll bet his comments won't affect many right wing voters (they were going to get out and vote for him anyway).

(6,960 posts)This is not a persuasion election.
This is a 'base turnout' election.
And for the Repuglicans ... dissuading marginal Democrats and independents from voting at all.
What do people think the four years of vilification of Barack Obama has been about? The Repuglican-Tea Party base is so ossified in their hate of Obama that nothing will make them change their minds. That mentality extends all the way down the ballot for them.
I am not happy to say it, but I think Repuglican voters are so irrational that this Akin numbskull is still going to be favored in this contest. As someone else posted, just wait as this blows over, the big Repuglican money will slowly, but surely, be back for this guy's campaign.
Now, perhaps this controversy will motivate enough marginal Democrats and independents to get out and vote, thus tilting this to McCaskill. It could be a close election and McCaskill is a determined campaigner ... but she still has her work cut out for her.

(15,185 posts)I cannot understand how any civilized person can vote for someone making such repulsive comments - especially any woman. But this is MO, the birth state of Rush Limbaugh so the state seems to produce some real winners!

(4,551 posts)They took the poll only 24 hours after the scandal. That's not enough time for it to filter down.
Hopefully this poll will encourage Akin to stay in!
Then we can pull the rug out . . .

(11,229 posts)The news of Akin's comment had just come out, people did not have time to reflect on his stupidity yet.
At least that is my hope.

(33,497 posts)9:30 PM PT: As some commenters have pointed out, the poll's sample was pretty red: 39% of respondents identified as Republicans, while only 30% are Dems and 32% independents. PPP's May poll was 35 D, 33 R, 33 I. According to the 2010 exit polls (obviously a high-water mark for Republicans), it was 37 R, 34 D, 28 I.

(92,242 posts)republican, though in all fairness, sometimes it takes a few days before polls fully factor in an event
If anyone showed Rachael Maddow's show yesterday, atkins view is not all that rare in repuke circles, and that disturbs the heck out of me that the election is still this close

(4,551 posts)Let's find out if Akin is staying in first, then we can worry about whether McCaskill will win.
I think if Akin stays in that McCaskill can win.
