I saw one instance of someone claiming that they now "... trusted Romeny/Ryan".

especially the "religious" Xian conservatives, who would eat him for lunch if he was more vocal and directly called for Akins ouster. That said, I think with indies and women, this was his ONLY chance to make up any ground. The Xian fundies are not going to get him elected, but if they are vocal they can damage him further with his base.

What a position to be in... His base still detests him or at best grudgingly supports him. To keep the base he gives up the rest. ahh, schadenfreude--though I don't discount the election-stealing attempts of Rove, Koch assholes and others.

The bottom line is a huge part of their base is involved here and, unlike black voters, who are far more pragmatic (read grown-up), too many would stamp their feet and stay home.
