2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"Romney's problem is that he can denounce Akin all he wants,...
... but there's a bill with Akin and Ryan's names on it that proves Ryan agrees with him on the definition of rape, denying Medicaid funding if the rape wasn't accompanied by enough physical force. And he voted for a measure that would allow states to ban abortion with no exception for rape or incest at all. Romney is stuck with Akin for the duration of the campaign." ~ JoeT1

(1,941 posts)I'm sure that, like me, you stand with Pres. Obama:
"Rape is rape."

(4,835 posts)However, it is the actual bill that I was looking for:

Apparently (according to the Mother Jones article) with all of the outrage they changed the language some. I'm just a little wary of claims in articles without a reference to the actual bill.

(1,309 posts)More obviously, current republican platform supports a constitutional amendment to make abortion illegal in all situations. Lete see Romney and Ryan walk away from their own platform.
But they just have to keep saying who and what they are to attract splinter groups while retaining the ignorant who are already on their side. Tough job, sell yourself as extreme but hope people do not believe you. Byre Bye RR

(24,411 posts)...needs to be stressed.
I am sure every media outlet is being bombarded with calls and pressured with orders from the Romney campaign to keep the Paul Ryan/Akin connection on the down low.
I've been watching the news this morning, and I'm hearing a lot about Akin and nothing about Paul Ryan and Akin--and how the signed a bill that was written for the express purpose of changing the rape language to "forced rape." The fact that this change was so important to them is significant. The initial legislation denied Medicaid funding to victims of rape. This second bill, HR3 specifically changed "rape" to "forced rape" and Paul Ryan needs to answer for that.
I want Paul Ryan to answer three questions:
What is "forced rape"?
What is the difference between rape and "forced rape"?
Can you give me some examples of rape (cases that to you don't fall into the your self-created category of "forced rape" that would be excluded from Medicaid money?
Paul Ryan needs to answer those questions. If they can spend three days on Biden's "chains" remark, they sure as hell can ask Paul Ryan this important questions.

(82,383 posts)until say forced date rape doesn't mean forced due to consent going out on the date.
Funny the decry teen pregnancy, but I'll bet statutory rape is not forcible to them. That's the first set of facts I bet they are thinking of.

(5,810 posts)Joe went almost apoplectic when Mika began pointing out the obvious that even if Akin drops out, the link to Ryan cannot be denied, due to the bill he co-sponsored with Akin. Joe shouted, got red in the face and I thought he was going fall out of his chair and have a total meltdown. Mika pretty much held her ground (for once) and didn't back down about the link. At some point later, Heilmann said pretty much the same thing. Ryan is joined at the hip to Akins and even surgical intervention won't help.
I also heard that the repubs are finishing up their platform and will include language that says there will be NO Abortions, NO Exceptions for Rape or Incest. Nice. These folks are real nice, aren't they? Women of America need to wake up. These are the people who claim they want the government out of our lives, but want to intrude on a woman's life at her most tragic and difficult time. What are they thinking?

(12,504 posts)...they've already opened the door to banning birth control. The public rhetoric is already out there. It's a full on onslaught of literally keeping barefoot and pregnant.

(49,008 posts)By legislating personhood for embryos, Ryan & Akin would be able to outlaw all abortions at any stage, without exception. That is their goal.
