By Associated Press, Published: August 22
NEW YORK Roman Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan will give the benediction at the Republican National Convention on the night Mitt Romney accepts the presidential nomination. The cardinals spokesman said the appearance was not an endorsement.
Dolan is the New York archbishop and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Romney announced Dolans appearance in an interview with Raymond Arroyos The World Over Live on EWTN Catholic network.
The archdiocese is one of more than 40 Catholic groups suing President Barack Obama over his mandate that employers provide health insurance that includes free birth control as a preventive service. The rule exempts houses of worship but includes faith-affiliated employers such as hospitals, charities and colleges.
Obama promised to change the requirement so that insurance companies and not faith-affiliated employers would pay for the coverage. But details have not been worked out and many religious leaders have said the compromise appears to be unworkable.

(16,986 posts)That's been covered extensively in the press. Many Catholic organizations were self-insuring due to the regulation already, so the lawsuits are just part of the continuing drama queendom of the good cardinal.

So should the diocese Bishop Morlino runs for comparing Obama to Hitler and Stalin.
AFAIC, they're not really Catholics; they're false prophets who should be outed as such.

(10,137 posts)IMHO: this is a way to get him a lot of notice, and if Romney gets elected, a toehold on the national stage - and a way to show the rest of the cardinals around the world how influential he can make the Church in the US. Dolan spends a good deal of time and money lobbying in Albany on his pet issues, among which is not letting the statue of limitations on child sexual abuse get extended. While he was bishop of Milwaukee he paid off abusers to make them go away.
He looks jovial and well-meaning, but he's got an agenda.
