Pelosi: Do-nothing Congress didn't have to be that way

By Nancy Pelosi

According to a new poll, nearly nine out of 10 Americans disapprove of the 112th Congress — and for good reason. This is one of the least productive Congresses in history, reported USA TODAY — even worse than the "do-nothing Congress" President Truman lambasted in 1948.

It doesn't have to work this way, even with a House controlled by Republicans and a White House and Senate controlled by Democrats. Recent history proves this point.

In 2006, after 12 years of GOP majorities, Democrats assumed control of the House and Senate. My colleagues in the House elected me to serve as speaker for the last two years of the Bush administration. No matter who occupied the Oval Office, Democrats in Congress knew we could not let partisan differences stand in the way of doing the work of the American people.

After the Republicans regained the House majority in 2010, I pledged in these pages that Democrats would work across the aisle on "solutions that reflect our priorities and address our nation's challenges." Yet Republicans refused, instead obstructing every initiative proposed by the Obama administration despite the president's efforts to cooperate.

When the poll asks if they support their own representatives, the approval is in the 50s. When asked if they approve of Congress as a whole, it's only about 10%.

So in other words, people want change, but they will re-elect their own guy because they feel he's not part of the problem.

They control most of the state legislatures, therefore they can make the districts look however they like.

un american campaign of keeping jobs bills down, no stimulus for infrastructure, hinder clean energy jobs for oil contributions, fight financial reform to protect banks, protect insurance companies, and big pharma.

Again Nancy leads by recognizing the problem facing the nation, the GOP putting party ahead of country, Gop taking oath to Grover Norquist instead of country. Lying on every issue.

Time to take gloves off and explain to people why, the jobs aren't there, the banks aren't lending, business is sitting on two trillion $
and not hiring. Why Tea Party congress did everything to make sure workers stayed unemployed, just to defeat Obama.
They have a lot of educating to do, to bring people up to speed about what was going on while, people were watching, football and baseball. One example, on a vote just weeks ago Obama wanted to reward companies by giving tax breaks to companies that create jobs in USA and take away tax breaks for companies MOVING jobs over seas. Tax payers are paying for the move overseas. Well that made too much sense and went down. That and many more alike are not being covered.
55,000 factories off shored, what happens to the jobs and tax base for the towns? Congress should act to make USA jobs the preferred choice.
