2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA self-declared NON DEMOCRAT and Socialist will not win the nomination.
Sorry. Much as I like him, ain't gonna happen. He isn't even a real member of the party, and his socialist declaration would never work in the general election. That's reality, and those who disagree may have good intentions but just are dismissing political reality. Vermont is not all of America.

(14,755 posts)The OP says the Bernie has no chance. I'm saying that polls for the GE, state or otherwise, show that he can be at least as competitive as any other Democratic candidate.

(58,785 posts)true. He won't win the nomination, but IMO for other reasons.
Examination of the electorate this season is showing that people have a new comfort with the word socialism -- except for today's anti-government John Birch types, of course. For decades America's lived with a combination of capitalism and some socialism-based programs and witnessed the same in all other advanced nations. Been there, done that, have the Social Security to prove it!
I'm guessing that if Bernie had run as a slightly-left-of-mainstream Democrat, like Martin O'Malley say, he'd probably be doing about the same right now as Governor O'Malley, if that well. Instead he tapped into a previously hidden desire for big, progressive solutions, and the "democratic socialist" label just isn't a boogie. People know he'd have to compromise and settle for what could be accomplished.

(45,319 posts)in order to declare that a man who now says 'I am a Democrat' is not a Democrat. He says he is, the Party says he is on a national basis and on a State level. The evidence says he is, as he founded the largest Democratic caucus in the Congress.
But you don't agree with any of those persons, facts or institutions.
I find it very odd that people who do not agree with DNC, Democratic Party of NH and millions of their fellow Democrats try to present themselves as the 'real Democrats'. Generally Democrats don't argue with other State Parties about who is a Democrat.
Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee and Liz Warren were all full tilt Republicans when Bernie was founding the progressive caucus. Republicans. Reagan/Bush supply side Republicans.
Do you contend that Warren is also not a Democrat? If she is one, how long did it take to kick in after her last vote for a Bush? What are the metrics here?

(42,862 posts)He won't win the nomination him because he's comes across as a cranky old coot. Apparently, more primary voters see that as a negative trait and a liability. If he's unable, or unwilling, to moderate his behavior and demeanor so that it doesn't interfere with his actual message, then he'll continue to have a dismal chance at being the nominee. If he can't accomplish the task of convincing enough primary voters that he's "the one," then we can safely conclude that his performance as president, and when dealing with other world leaders, would be similarly ineffective.
Yeah, he's a great guy and all, but he's got an irritating personality and manner. The far left just adores him for that, and I totally get it. Seriously, I do. But smart candidates know that elections and primaries are not won by trying to appeal only to one segment.
As it stands now, Bernie's followers need to prepare themselves for disappointment. The OP is correct that Bernie will not win the nomination.

(900 posts)To me this election cycle means more than just electing a president, its a transformation for the party as a whole. At the #Demforum, something that struck out the most to me was the Maddow pointing out how the DNC has abandoned the south ,and doing so allowing the rise of the hardcore right wing.
- DNC has committed the Second Great Betrayal- the majority of African Americans live in the south. The DNC have turned their back on their most loyal voting bloc. By doing so , harsh voting id laws, punitive living wages, failed drug wars, mass incarceration have taken over these states. Yet its only blacks that Democrats have failed but poor/middle class whites who have been manipulated to think that by voting Republican they gain or have a upper advantage over POC.
I say all that to say this, in my opinion Sen. Sanders being socialist will be the last thing on people's minds when they are going to vote. The people see how the deck is stacked against them and the want someone who will bring change, energy, and who will initiate the revitalization of a Democratic Party.

(12,504 posts)I was trying very hard to give Bernie the benefit of the doubt for finally announcing that he was now running as a Democrat and that may have meant that had joined to party and was now a Democrat. I was trying to be understanding of a man who doesn't like to evolve that he now walks back his earlier statements, "I am not a Democrat", " ...it would be hypocritical of me to run as a Democrat" and "I am an Independent".
But Howard Dean hedged. For all of his Bernie support, in a pre-forum interview, Chris Matthew clearly used Bernie's own words "I am running as a Democrat" to plant a seed of doubt. And that is the bottom line, Bernie is running as a Democrat, he never joined the party to be a Democrat. Chris Matthews pressed DWS over and over until she finally and hesitatingly relented and said that Bernie is a Democrat, but Howard refused to capitulate.
I'm with Howard Dean. Bernie may be running as a Democrat. This is old news, we knew he was attempting to run on the Democratic ticket, but Bernie is still refusing to actually be a Democrat and join the party.

(45,319 posts)had a plank against marriage equality. The interviewer attempted to correct him, he insisted and ranted against equality in the name of this Party. When contacted, Dean thought is was funny. So, either he willfully lied about such an important policy or he was utterly clueless about the platform of the Party of which he was chairman. Either way, I lost respect for him when he refused to make a public correction.
I had a chance to meet and eat with Dean not long back and I said no, because I knew I'd bark at him about that and that he'd pretend not to remember. That's how he is.
If you claim our Platform is that which it is not, are you in any way qualified to say someone else is not a Democrat? He was promoting some other platform as chairman. But he is the wise one?
Give me a break.
