2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWorst in the World in . . . Math?
Something caught my eye a few months ago. International standardized tests in mathematics now put U.S. students at or near the bottom, in the entire developed world.[br /]
Which is really odd, when you think about it. After all, 2+2=4 in New York, Tokyo, and everywhere else I know.[br /]
One recent exam ([a href="http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/54/12/46643496.pdf" target="_blank"]results here[/a]) put U.S. students 31st in the world in math -- just a few points higher than the very bottom among the OECD (i.e., developed) countries. One earlier exam, called TIMSS, had U.S. twelfth-graders at the very bottom of the OECD in math. So the government stopped giving that test to U.S. twelfth-graders.[br /]
Yes, that certainly solves that problem.[br /]
So why is this? Whatever the reason is, it certainly isnt spending. In education, as in health, the United States spends more per capita than any other country.[br /]
The Economist, a conservative British news magazine, offered this illuminating explanation, from Oxford University:[br /]
Despite rising attainment levels, [the Oxford study] concludes, there has been little narrowing of longstanding and sizeable attainment gaps. Those from disadvantaged backgrounds remain at higher risks of poor outcomes. American studies confirm the point; Dan Goldhaber of the University of Washington claims that non-school factors, such as family income, account for as much as 60% of a childs performance in school.[br /]
So because America has the fifth most unequal distribution of wealth in the entire world, America also has some of the worst math scores in the entire world. Its as simple as 2+2=4. No wonder the 99% is angry; its getting to the point where a lot of us dont even know what 99% means.[br /]
Why should we be surprised that the poor cant count? In Mitt Romneys America, they dont count.[br /]
Honestly, we cant go on like this.[br /]
Courage,[br /]
Alan Grayson[br /]
P.S. The highest math scores in the world were in China. Communist China.[br /]

why is this happening.
I told my seventh grader today that I think hed probably have problems with the assignments *I* had in 4th grade! (And he's a GOOD student!)
The standards have been lowered. There is no doubt about that. The question is WHY?
That's why I homeschooled my middle son. He was way too smart - and way too "different" - for traditional public schools (in our area).
My younger son is in a Spanish immersion program or HE'd probably be hs'ed, too.

(10,117 posts)...as a teacher, I thank you for this post.
We MUST fix education...YESTERDAY. But, to do that, we have to do it right. I hope you will read (or have already read ) Diane Ravitch's book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System.

She has it right, IMHO.
