2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI would like to applaud DWS for scheduling 3 of the first 4 debates on the weekend
Many of us have trouble watching debates on weekdays, especially those of us in the pacific time zone.
Having the debates on the weekend, especially during the holiday season, works out perfectly for my schedule.
Thank you Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

(21,210 posts)casual exchanges. Are the Dems holding debates??? But they have watched the Repub debates and know their message.
It is not just about 'a candidate' it is also about getting your message out to people on issues. Honestly I am not sure the Dems could screw this up any better than they are already doing.
It is as if we are holding the door open for the other party.
All you need to do is look at the number of viewers between the last Dem debate and the Repub debate to see the message is being marketed to more people. You cannot win voters if you do not get your message out to the largest number of people.

All I know for sure is that YOUR and MY vote count as do the votes millions of people. We all get to choose.

(2,427 posts)I overheard a conversation at work where a guy asked why the Democrats don't have debates on TV. I just fucking shuddered.
slipslidingaway
(21,210 posts)but I can hardly believe the lack of "fight" our party brings to this election.
As Senator Byrd said to an empty chamber in opposition to the invasion of Iraq 'we might as well hang a sign in front saying "Gone Fishing."
So many were not paying attention and not questioning what the administration was marketing at that moment.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)How can that be if "the people" support him? Thanks in advance for your response.
slipslidingaway
(21,210 posts)yes we might, but I have run across others who do not have a clue.
How can you support someone if you barely know their name? How can you support an issue if it is not advanced? Many people have heard the 'other side' but not so much from our party.
It is not just about one person, too many people suffer when the Dems hold the door open for the Repubs.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)His name recognition is way up, but his poll numbers are flat. At some point you need to face reality. They've heard him and they don't prefer him.

(5,761 posts)Hardly. He's running against of the famous names in politics.
You're a Dem, you should be supporting the fact that all our candidates deserve to be heard, no matter who you support!
6 debates is a fucking joke.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)The polls show he is very well known by respondents. Stop being in denial. The more people know about Bernie the less they like him. No surprise. We're not socialists in this country.
6 debates is plenty. And they clearly are not helping him.
pinebox
(5,761 posts)Stop being in denial? Quit projecting your stupid on others.
LOL "The more people know about Bernie the less they like him". Someone has a problem with facts.
His favorability is higher than Shillary's and sorry but he's not a socialist. He's a democratic socialist.
6 debates isn't plenty and you should probably quit channeling your inner Ted Cruz already.

(12,958 posts)stupidly believing that Hillary can skate through the general on name recognition alone. DWS/Hillary are saying, "Fuck the Democratic Brand".
It is a recipe for disaster.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)Is not "the democratic brand." Sorry to be the one to break it to you.
AgingAmerican
(12,958 posts)Not individual candidates.
DWS/Hillary are blowing it. They are saying, "Fuck the Democratic brand". This will pretty much ruin their chances in the general, but they just do not care.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)Bernie is still losing. HRC is still winning by every measure. Please explain how a guy that can't get unions, Dems in congress, or even the majority of dem voters in ANY poll wins the GE? LOL!
You mad because he tells the truth?
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)Just saying a guy that dissed the party for 25 years is not the democratic brand.
pinebox
(5,761 posts)and the Dem 89 senators who voted to gut SNAP are the Dem brand, right?
No thank you, I'll keep my indy affiliation.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)You just want to come here and attack them. Got it.
pinebox
(5,761 posts)like so many on here who are liberals.
I just came here to attack Dems? Lots of hyperbole on your part. Keep defending the 1% though and the status quo with a candidate who can't even support a living wage for people let alone Dems who vote to cut SNAP.
Sounds legit.
Policy is MORE important than party!
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)And it's apparent to me that your purpose here is simply to attack them. Enjoy your stay. Because after Hillary gets the nod you'll either have to stop posting this nonsense or be banned.
pinebox
(5,761 posts)and I'm sorry you're mad about that but I'd much rather support someone who supports my ideals than someone who doesn't.
Sounds like you have a problem with tolerance, you should honestly get that checked out. Information is knowledge, knowledge is education, education is winning.
So the deal is, you're mad and try to character assassinate when you have no response on the issues? I deal with people like that on a daily basis on twitter and I usually smack them down, it's called "whack a troll". I quite like it XD
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)You either support the nominee or hit the road when the primary is over. Keep that in mind. You're new, so take this as a friendly reminder. Your HRC bashing will not fly once she wins the nomination.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)If you can't spend a few hours on the weekend or at least record it or watch it later online then you just don't care.
I think the viewers are down because the first one was enough, or people just don't care.
slipslidingaway
(21,210 posts)if a party truly wants to garner the most votes and advance their issues then you make it easy for people and not difficult.
Pretty simple really!

(35,619 posts)....but millions of fewer people watch weekend debates. Putting debates on the weekend is bad for the Democratic Party overall.

(7,393 posts)A party is anywhere you make one.
For the record I have 2 Bernie friends. Both were invited. Both came to the first debate party. Only one could make it to the second. The one at the second exclaimed "dammit Bernie" when he blew the Paris attack opening question. The rest of us stayed quiet in respectful silence, except for gasping. Couldn't help it. LOL!

A record 15.3 million viewers.
2nd debate was on CBS a free to watch network channel on a Saturday evening.

Yes we still have the internet, but no longer have any recording devices. Please do not assume everyone has the resources that you do.
And that goes for many people, please remember the shrinking middle class that at least one candidate speaks about continuously.

(10,893 posts)It was smart scheduling on her part, and even if a person can't see the debates, there's YouTube and TiVo just in case. There's not much of an excuse for a person to miss any debates if they're genuinely interested, unless maybe if they can't afford cable or Internet. As far as the ratings go in comparison to the GOP debates, I'm not surprised that they're lower and that the Dem debates are portrayed as "boring"; none of our candidates act like drooling neanderthals, and they're discussing real issues while the GOP debates are a political version of Bad Girls Club.

(13,029 posts)truly haven't made up their minds yet. How many debates (if any) does it take for someone who actually gives a darn to choose between the candidates? Unlike the Republicans, it's not as if there are that many of them, or that they're so much alike.

(16,685 posts)It's about publicity. And the public has had the Republican brand shoved in their face with no counterpoint all summer and fall. And if you think that's going to turn them off then you underestimate a nation that elected Reagan and Bushes.
