Bernie Sanders expected to return to Senate duties a day after hernia surgery

Bernie Sanders, the independent US senator who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, was undergoing a medical procedure Monday to repair a hernia, his staff said.

The elective outpatient hernia repair procedure was being performed at George Washington University Hospital, his staff said.

Sanders, who is 74, “will resume his Senate duties on Tuesday,” according to a statement from campaign spokesman Michael Briggs.

They poke a little hole in you and it's all done orthoscopically. And the abdomen already has a handy hole available, the navel.

So maybe Bernie had that type of surgery.

When my father had hernia surgery decades ago, he was layed up for weeks.

a month ago, four little incisions and it was sucked out through one of these inch or so cuts. I also have an incisional hernia but I can not get it operated on because of my shunt tubing though.

Knocked out at 10am, back home at 3pm checking emails.

If they did a lap surgery for Senator Sanders and probably did, no surprise he's back on duty.

The old way was a horror. You were rolled open like a sardine can and spent weeks, sometimes months, recovering.

How long did you have to stay in hospital? Not long I hope. Not the best fun you can have in a hospital gown.

some of the stuff they did even 10 or 20 years ago seems like it came from the dark ages.

i know they did the best they could at the time, but the way many suffered due to lack of treatment (or from the treatment itself) is truly horrifying.

it still can take out a lot from many people. It depends on the size of the hernia, and a lot of other things, and you are right, if he goes back to soon, all kinds of complications can ensue.

that this 74 year old man, had lap surgery, and is back on the job the next day. It is a proven fact that as we get older that anesthesia is risky, and recovery takes longer. I've seen it up front and personal. Yet, he's back on the road to the White House 1 day later. WOW!!! Is this man on a mission to save our democracy, or what? It must be a sign.

was far more extensive and painful. However, I wonder, adjusting for real dollars, if it was far less expensive in the U.S. back then than it is today.
