___ In a show of solidarity with the American Muslim community, Martin O'Malley visited a mosque and community center in Sterling, Virginia, on Friday, where he told those in attendance that Donald Trump does not represent the future of the United States.
In times of fear and division, the Democratic presidential candidate said at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, it is easy for "unscrupulous politicians or hate preachers," like Trump, to turn people against each other.
"But that sort of language that your hear from Donald Trump is not the language of Americas future. I know the language of Americas future," O'Malley said, adding that he speaks to people under the age of 30 every day and rarely hears anyone with Trump's views.

@MartinOMalley to ADAMs "my primary reason to be here is at this moment in history to stand in solidarity with you."
I know that there have been many acts of violence. I know there are acts of ignorance that have been encouraged by some in our political discourse, but the larger arc of our history is the larger arc of love and generosity and respect for one another," O'Malley added.
"And so I know, and I know that our young people understand that the tragic murders that took place in San Bernardino does not define Islam any more than that horrible murder that took place in Charleston defines Christianity," he said in invoking the June 17 slaying of nine people at a historically black church at the hands of a white supremacist.
Together, O'Malley concluded, "inshallah (if God wills), we shall overcome these challenges."

(34,112 posts)I am so glad he is in the race and continuing to do the right things for the country with a spotlight.
This made me happy this morning. Thank you and thank you Martin O'Malley!
...he's using his moment in the spotlight to focus the light on and elevate others and that's a beautiful thing.

(2,161 posts)The cleric at this mosque was formerly the director of ISNA, which is the group by which Saudi Wahhabi money is funneled to mosques, along with Wahhabi clerics and literature.
Saudi funded Wahhabi mosques are a danger to our communities, teaching people to hate infidels like me. The vice chancellor of Germany has recently spoken out about the threat of Wahhabi mosques and ideology. http://www.thelocal.de/20151206/saudi-funded-mosques-breeding-extremism-germany

(85,999 posts)...I seriously doubt the 'danger' from this mosque you're promoting. Disgusting, really. You posted an article about some mosque in Germany as proof, I suppose.
Typical of this place these days, to find this type of xenophobic, guilt by association nonsense attempting to drown out this responsible and necessary advocacy.
Find one progressive source for your charges. There isn't one. I suspect that's why you didn't post any proof at all.

(9,314 posts)More politicians should be stepping out and doing the same thing.
A few nights ago, just before the nightly news here in DC, an announcer said one of the upcoming features would be discussing Muslim children in the United States, many of whom are citizens, who have become fearful for their lives. I was so deeply saddened to hear this headline, I could not watch the story.
The street I live on is richly culturally mixed. We have zero problems in getting along. Recently, a very large Muslim school was built about four blocks away from here, and it is beautiful. We all get along here, and that is the way it should be everywhere.

(85,999 posts)...and there's a beautiful new Muslim school a few blocks away which hasn't generated any visible opposition (we could very well be talking about the same one).
You'd think the nation would have worked all of their xenophobia out in the decade after 9-11. Sadly, it's always going to be another wedge the right uses (and other gullible or cynical people use) to opportunistically stir up fear and resentment to advantage their politics.

(85,999 posts)...isn't in the numbers of votes on this one. It's all about priorities and standing up for principles. Outstanding leadership from O'Malley, providing a clear distinction from the republican fearmongerers who are basically threatening war against Islam. A very timely and important stand.
