2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo, the Obamas & the Bidens were down the street from me today in NH...
I didnt get to go because (dammit) I had to work. But my merchandising job takes me to a grocery store about 15 minutes from UNH. Its the closest big grocery store to the school & the kids came back a couple of weeks ago.
During my day, while festering about not attending the rally, I decided to count the kids that came in with Obama buttons on. 56 kids. I personally saw 56 college kids with Obama buttons. This in the span of TWO hours.
The kids are fired up! Made my day!!!

I never use that icon but it seemed so necessary right now.
Strawbery Banke is about 10 minutes from where I live.
And I just think its amazing that slaves were auctioned just a few hundred yards from where Obama spoke today. In fact, theres a marker memorializing the slaves who "transferred" through the boathouse at Prescott Park (still standing).
I think the symbolism was lost on the majority of people. The "news" outlets dont consider that "news".

The Wharf
at Prescott Park
Sheafe Wharf Enslavement of Africans was part of Portsmouth life by 1645. Portsmouth merchants were involved in the slave trade by the 1680s. Captives arrived in Portsmouth by ship at piers like Long Wharf, which stood here in colonial times. Mostly male children and adolescents, they were advertised in terms like those quoted above. They were auctioned, or sometimes sold directly from shipboard or dockside. In Portsmouth the enslaved were made to work as house servants, craftsmen, seamen, dock workers, and farm hands. As diverse West African languages were augmented by a new shared language, community building began. A 1775 census reported 656 enslaved Africans in New Hampshire, mostly in Portsmouth and adjacent towns. There were also a small number of free black residents. Since colonial times Portsmouth's population has remained 2% - 4% black.

(297,595 posts)the plaque! "Slavery ending by 1800..."! They were way ahead of other parts of the country!
I was imagining what those young boys were thinking when they landed after becoming captives in their native country and their long voyage..? I'm so glad you pointed the history out to us.
