Explaining the Inauguration Day Cabal

I was disappointed that this morning, Carl Bernstein on MJ could get no traction on the meme that Republicans met on Inauguration Day in order to pledge to withhold support from the President. Part of his problem was that Pataki and Joe Scar decided to talk above him at almost every turn. However, I felt that Bernstein did not himself explain the problem simply and effectively. It seems to me that his explanation could simply be explained as an electoral strategy--do what you can to get back into the White House--that was unique only in that it occurred on the first day. However, it seems to me that the Cabal is unique because it was not just obstructionist, but also bitterly contradictory, pledging to do things that would be harmful to the economy solely to lower the President's public image. Is this right? Is there a better explanation (that can be given in a short sentence)?

it would not have mattered how he explained or described it. They would have boo-hooed it as normal strategy planning.
