(CNN) -- Trailing Hillary Clinton among Democrats, Bernie Sanders could be looking across the aisle for new support -- specifically at down-on-their-luck voters drawn to Donald Trump's populist economic message.
In a taped interview with CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday, the Vermont senator -- a self-proclaimed democratic-socialist -- made an overture to "angry" Americans frustrated by financial woes and concerned by foreign terrorism.
"What I'm suggesting is that what Trump has done with some success has taken that anger, taken those fears -- which are legitimate -- and converted them into anger against Mexicans, anger against Muslims," Sanders said.
But while he made the case that both candidates had tapped into a similar frustration, Sanders was careful to underline the different approach he offered -- a sharp contrast to Trump's often controversial or demeaning rhetorical spasms.

(24,411 posts)Suggesting that Bernie is "trailing" so he's looking for support in other areas.
He's within single digits in Iowa and leading in NH. Those are the first two states that vote. He's made up huge losses in Iowa. He started at .8 percent and has tightened the race with an entire month to go.
This wasn't a desperate plea for votes, as this article suggests. Bernie is looking to not only win, but to win handily.
He's doing better than Obama was in Iowa and NH at this point.
If you look at the bottom of the article, you can see "The-CNN-Wire & © 2015 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. All rights reserved."
Time Warner is one of Hillary's big contributors. Their negative spin and to Bernie's cross-over appeal is desperate. Do they not even try to hide that they are shilling for her? LOL

(19,326 posts)embarrassing that Hillarians argue for 3rd Way 'insider' triangulation politics, while
trashing another candidate seeking to defuse & neutralize a dangerously racist
juggernaut in its tracks by redirecting hatred towards Wall St. (that support$ Hillary),
by telling the truth about a pathologically lying demagogue.
embarrassing indeed.

(37,364 posts)these Trump supporters? Do you cringe and worry when you hear the people you are closest to being denigrated and insults and threats being hurled about them by his supporters? You need to stop and consider who is triangulating here. If you embrace racists and mysogynists, don't expect to be taken seriously. You've become part of the problem.

(19,326 posts)Stop putting words into my mouth.
HINT #1: there is a volcano of discontent & anti-establishment sentiment in the electorate that
Trump is dangerously exploiting -- thanks to him being "encouraged" to run for POTUS by Bill Clinton.
HINT #2: Bernie is reaching out to the WHOLE 99% of the electorate, not just people who he knows
already agree with him, just like he did at Liberty U. and has been doing from day one.
HINT #3: Disaffected & scared GOP voters are desperately flocking to Trump because he's running as
a Republican and is a "good entertainer" that tells them lies to relieve their pain. Trump is more than
happy to exploit that to benefit his candidacy.
Are there racists and misogynists among Trump supporters? Absolutely.
Is every single Republican who has ever considered Trump or gone to a Trump rally a hard-core KKK
racists or misogynists? No. many of them simply need someone to blame for their sad economic plight and
are more than happy to accept any handy lie handed to them. Sad but true.
I can see Hillarians are enjoying attempting to slime Bernie for his uncanny ability -- despite being a self-
confessed socialist & far Left Progressive -- to speak honestly and respectfully to a broad swath of the
electorate, and appeal to their better angels. <-- If I supported Hillary, I'd be scared shitless about this,
and want to stop it by any means possible.
So I don't blame you in a way. Please proceed to carry water for the bought-and-paid-for corporatist
DINO ... as you see fit.

Still this doesn't necessarily prove that Trump intends to lose, or to take a dive when it's time to spend real money on ads, which is my relative's theory -- evidently he isn't taking donations, and so far relying on his own plane, staff and $$ -- but it's a possibility. Of course it's also possible that Bill didn't foresee that Trump would catch on, also that Trump might change his mind and decide to run for real, even if he didn't initially plan to. . . .

Trumps boundless unbridled ego is being fed big-time, making him a bit more unpredictable
than the Clintons probably wanted, and it could backfire on Bill, but much more more tragically,
it could be an unmitigated disaster for all of us if he ever gets into the WH.
ucrdem
(15,512 posts)Even if he pays his own expenses he still has to hire ad firms and pollsters, put together a GOTV operation, win endorsements, support down-ticket local races, and so on. Is he game? Seems unlikely but yeah he might decide he's the one true savior and go for it. In that case I see him playing to Hillary's strengths in much the way that Bernie does: Trump is sexist, racist, inexperienced, poorly versed in law and internationally scorned; Hillary is the opposite. Likewise Sanders' age makes Hillary's a non-issue. So as long as Trump and Hillary maintain their leads she's got a clear path to victory. Sure it can backfire but so far it's looking like clear sailing.

(12,875 posts)... make the case why voters should vote for him, regardless of how the media or anyone else categorizes some of the voters.
Has Bernie sold out his policies and his principles in his effort to persuade potential crossover voters?
If not, then his effort to gain votes from working class Americans who have been manipulated by decades of RW propaganda into voting against their own economic interests and are fed up with status quo Washington politicians should be applauded. This is what the Democratic Party needs to do to retain the White House and regain control of Congress.

Martin Eden
(12,875 posts)But you paint with an overly broad brush if you think every potential crossover voter who currently polls for Trump is a racist or homophobe. Some are frustrated with the status quo more than anything else and, as previously stated, have been manipulated into voting against their own economic interests.
Bottom line is, we need some crossover votes to have a shot at retaking Congress.

However if people will vote against health care for themselves and their families due to racism and hate it's awfully hard to get these people to vote for you. Nixon's Southern Strategy work too well.

I intend to vote for the Democratic candidate this election. And I intend to respect every voter as having made the decision of their conscience. Bigots will vote for Hillary, too. Trust me.
