(8,377 posts)there could be a few "special pieces of 'information' " included in those briefings, if you know what I mean.

(6,089 posts)why does this idiot need to know anything unless he actually gets appointed by hook or crook?
What will he do with the information once he has it? - this is a dangerous situation - he could start a world war with just shooting off his ignorant mouth
Bad Bad idea

(17,860 posts)That's the only way Mitt "Dumber than Palin" Rmoney could be getting any intelligence.

(60,335 posts)According to CNN, in the tradition of all presidents since the 1950s, President Barack Obama will extend intelligence briefings to include his soon-to-be presidential opponent and his campaign (those who pass security clearances) following Romney's nomination and acceptance in August. Maybe Romney will now stop sounding as if he doesn't know what's going on when he makes suggestions that mirror what's already being done by the Obama administration.
Some might wonder at the wisdom of such a move, but if Romney were to win the election in November, he would have just two-and-a-half months to get up to speed on the state of international and domestic affairs by the time he took office. Domestic and foreign affairs, policy, and diplomacy, which are cornerstones of national security, are not light subject matter that a president should be attempting to accumulate and process while transitioning into office. Better to be aware of the myriad sensitive problems and potential security trouble spots going in.

If that was July, then his getting and ignoring it.

(12,977 posts)Of course, Politico is trying to let Romney off the hook by suggesting he couldn't have shot his mouth off if he'd already been getting briefed. But that aside...

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is expected to begin receiving regular intelligence briefings from the Obama administration in the coming days.
Senior aides report that the Romney campaign is nearing the conclusion of a required security clearance process. The former Massachusetts governor did not have to request the briefings. They are customary for major-party candidates after their nominating conventions.

(18,402 posts)They can arrest him if he misuses them, right?
There are very strict rules on intelligence secrets, and people are charged with federal crimes when they transgress them.

(50,942 posts)In addition, I would think that the scope of what is provided is limited in some cases depending on sensitivity. Also, any violations of the sharing info with unauthorized people likely will result in at least total efn embarrassment to Romney as well as possible prosecution.
Just my thought on it.

(1,235 posts)This will only pour gasoline on the "Obama doesn't go to his briefings" republican blather, and the next time Romney goes careening like a drunken frat boy into the guardrail on the interstate of foreign policy, it'll blow up in their faces even harder.

(13,360 posts)first, I agree with others upthread that this is a scary fucking thought, AND that part of his 'security clearance' should be release of the tax returns... but that said:
He probably won't get much but an outline of briefings, not details...at least i hope so.
and, what if there just happens to be some obscure info in there that he 'slips' and reveals? depending on the effects and who he tells, it could be easy for the Obama Admin to nail him on it.
Of course, I don't see Romney sharing this so much with senior staffers (though we know he will) I see him being so lame he would actually let something slip during a stump speech or interview... and then the Obama Admin would have his nuts in the cracker!

(2,830 posts)Right after he passes the top secret level background clearance which would go back 10 years. Don't forget to include your taxes since there seems to be a few questions...

(12,272 posts)It is customary in the latter stages of a general election campaign for presidential challengers to get these vital intelligence updates, regardless of which party is in power.
A top Romney foreign policy adviser acknowledged on Wednesday the death of a U.S. ambassador in Libya was not yet known to the campaign when it issued a statement that sharply criticized the president's handling of the crisis.

More fucking manipulation to explain away bad media coverage. Seriously, Mitt would not be able to assimilate any more information.
