2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThis is the main reason I feel so passionately that we must defeat Willard Romney
Several Supreme Court Justices are expected to retire which would be disastrous if Romney were in a position to appoint 1 or 2 especially if 1 of them were Ruth Bader Ginsburg or Stephen Breyer.
Taken from Mitt Romney's official election website
As president, Mitt will nominate judges in the mold of Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Alito. These justices hold dear what the great Chief Justice John Marshall called the basis on which the whole American fabric has been erected: a written Constitution, with real and determinate meaning. The judges that Mitt nominates will exhibit a genuine appreciation for the text, structure, and history of our Constitution and interpret the Constitution and the laws as they are written. And his nominees will possess a demonstrated record of adherence to these core principles.

(60,536 posts)1. Romney: I’d No Longer Nominate Judges Like John Roberts
Flip, flop, flip, flop.
--------------
On his campaign website, Romney states that as president he will nominate judges in the mold of Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Alito. But apparently Roberts no longer makes the cut.
CBS reporter Jan Crawford asked the Republican nominee if hed still nominate a justice like the Bush-appointed Roberts, knowing what he knows now.
Well, I certainly wouldnt nominate someone who I knew was gonna come out with a decision I violently disagreed with or vehemently, rather, disagreed with, Romney said. And he reached a conclusion I think that was not accurate and not an appropriate conclusion. But that being said, hes a very bright person and Id look for individuals that have intelligence and believe in following the Constitution.
