Pro- Ana groups (pro-anorexia)

Has it really come to this?

Context;
Pro-ana refers to the promotion of the eating disorder anorexia nervosa. It is often referred to simply as "ana" and is sometimes personified by anorexics as a girl named Ana.[1] The lesser-used term pro-mia refers likewise to bulimia nervosa[2] and is sometimes used interchangeably with pro-ana.
Pro-ana organizations differ widely in their stances. Most claim that they exist mainly as a non-judgmental environment for anorexics; a place to turn to, to discuss their illness, and to support those who choose to enter recovery. Others deny anorexia nervosa is a mental illness and claim instead that it is a "lifestyle choice" that should be respected by doctors and family.[1]

Recent study;

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) — A new research study from Indiana University suggests there may be benefits to the controversial activities of "pro-ana" bloggers, the online community for people with eating disorders.
Most of the 33 bloggers from seven countries interviewed for the study, which has just been published in the journal Health Communication, said their writing activities provide a way to express themselves without judgment, which the authors believe can be crucial to their treatment.
"We don't know what are the effects of participating in this community on health," said Daphna Yeshua-Katz, a doctoral student in telecommunications in the IU College of Arts and Sciences. "But we do know that the current therapy for eating disorders is not effective."
"These communities are providing support, albeit supporting an illness that may result in someone's death," added Nicole Martins, an assistant professor of telecommunications at IU. "But until they're ready to go and seek recovery on their own terms, this might actually be a way of prolonging their life, so that they are mentally ready to tackle their recovery process.
"From the outside looking in, this looks like a really disturbing community, but I think that the fact that these women are able to find support from one another and find a place where someone understands what they're going through is a really good thing," Martins added.

Popular culture news;
Pro-Anorexia Bloggers Say They Write Online To Escape "Judgment"
“Nobody 'normal' understands why you want to starve yourself for days on end,” one blogger told researchers.

Pro-anorexia (pro-ana for short) and pro-bulimia (pro-mia) websites are usually decried as encouraging women's eating disorders — so much so that social networking sites like Pinterest have banned pro-ana content. But a new study of pro-ana bloggers claims that many of them are getting a sense of understanding and support online that they can't find anywhere else.
For a study published in the journal Health Communication, telecommunications grad student Daphna Yeshua-Katz and her coauthor Nicole Martins interviewed 33 girls and women, aged 15 to 33, who had posted pro-ana content — defined as instructions for anorexic behavior, "thinspiration" photos of emaciated bodies, or poetry or song lyrics about anorexia — on platforms like Blogger, Tumblr, or LiveJournal. Excerpts from the interviews offer a rare window into a practice that many recognize as unhealthy, but still feel they need.

I'm stunned that telecommunications majors are doing studies with what I expect are shitty methodologies and trying to portray this shit as somehow beneficial.

What would help is a therapist or psychologist. What doesn't help is other people who encourage you to keep damaging your health.

I can't believe this, I really can't.

The author of the study says that they find support and that's the first step to getting help.

How she goes from interacting on pro-ana sites to deciding you need professional help appears to be based on nothing but conjecture.

She also only got a 10% response rate. She might want to read up on something called nonrespondent bias.

This is sickening.

I haven't visited them for a while but generally they prohibit pictures, numbers, and tips for losing weight. These are different from pro ana sites. Proi recovery sites can help people at all stages of recovery. Pro ana sites are dangerous and discourage recovery. The worst thing that anorexics can do is compare their bodies and methods. I say this as someone who had suffered from it in the past.

Young women today are being manipulated by advertisers, music and TV. What kind of role models are Kesha, Rhihanna, Gaga, etc?

When I was in school it was called sociobiology, regardless the entire discipline is based on self report data a notoriously unreliable dependent measure.

Basically most of their hypothesis are untestable.

9. it is merely storytelling. and i would be ok with that, BUT... it is being taught in universities

as fact and it is growing so much with the internets and people, especially men buying into it. i believe it is helping all this attack on women. so for me, i cannot really let it go as harmless. raising two sons, i am having to address the myths as they are being created, pointing out all the holes in the theories.

any time print talks about gender issues, they add in some evo psych garbage to insure that point of view gets out there.

if you have people not willing to even question what they are reading, it causes very real harm.

but, thank you for you post. i appreciate.

7. i agree it is all about control. abosulte self power and control. i loved it when i played the game

to have support and others playing it i would think continues feeding it. not to mention giving tips on others ways to play, that one may not have thought about.

it not only gives ultimate control and power with self, it gives it in such subtle ways with all those around that love you.

this is a tricky disorder. i do not know if anyone can totally get rid of it.

getting preg with first one was probably the life saver for me. having a hubby that really did not pay attention to what i saw as deficits was great, too. but, regardless, over the years i would slip back into it.

going on a trip, .... i was there and drop an unhealthy 20 lbs in two weeks. my norm weight is more than fine. going to a party, drop ten in a week.

i can go a healthy amount of calories and then drop it to under 500 for a good two or three weeks.

see the pride. even now. and i am well out of it....

it is a high

but, then, i am remembering the high and not the lows. cause the low is, seeing the ribs and saying.... why am i not good enough.

and self inflicting.

i didnt get rid of the negative of it.
