I expect nobody is as annoyed by that opening line as me, but it got stuck in my head and I had to write it down somewhere, and heres as good a place as any. Im sorry.
Im writing this in a fit of fury at the latest manifestation of left sexism, having spent two days in an argument with a left-wing man and a lot of his left-wing mostly male followers where they have been absolutely refusing to see the point Ive been trying to make. Of course, this isnt the first time something like this has happened, and it certainly wont be the last unless something absolutely spectacular gives right at this moment. As I cant hear the sweet sound of kyriarchy falling over and smashing into dust, I can only assume that all of this is going to happen again in due course.
Sexism on the left comes in forms as diverse as the beliefs of those who are lumped under the umbrella term of the left. The most overt form, perhaps, is outright sexist language (bitch, etc), and rape apologism (e.g. George Galloway, the SWP), but thats the tip of a very sexist iceberg. Among the liberals, it often comes as a backlash against calling out sexism and pleas for unity. For some, sexism is a problem to be solved later, and we should, at present, fight the perceived real enemy. Then theres the manarchists, swinging their dicks as they ignore their female comrades. Theres also those who can say all of the right words, and then their behaviour doesnt match up at all, and they will defend their behaviour using theory that they learned and are apparently incapable of applying to themselves. Others still think that theyre doing more than enough already to combat sexism. Then theres the ones who insist that intersectionality is somehow equivalent to identity politics, proving that they are ignorant about what at least one of these things is. This is hardly an exhaustive list. Left sexism manifests in so many ways.
It all has one thing in common: that self-assurance that they are completely right which comes with male privilege.

(40,416 posts)Who should arguably be the last segment of the population to embrace sexism. Nevertheless, it's a fact that there are so-called skeptics who actually argue that sexism isn't a real thing and it's just militant women putting forth lies.
Rebecca Watson and PZ Myers are leading the battle. More power to them. They both have noisy blogs and have a voice which needs to be heard.
Rebecca Watson and her blog, SkepChick
Of course, PZ Myers has the wonderfully cranky Pharyngula.
Sexism just sucks. The objectification of women is an evil thing.

(42,014 posts)Those women are just badass, the atheist/skeptic feminist community is very vocal about sexism.
It's interesting where you find women speaking up, from skeptics to comic-cons, it's almost like they're thinking 'this shit? Are you fucking kidding me? Oh no you don't--
Strong voices.

(40,416 posts)And PZ is wonderful, too. Standing up, as I would.
They are right, and the misogynists are wrong. Period!
BTW, Rebecca Watson has been a major contributor to the best skeptical podcast on the planet, the Skeptics Guide to the Universe which has been podcasting weekly for years without missing a week. Rebecca is one of the regular panelists, the only female. She makes her presence known. I never miss an episode. And they have their entire archive on line, free downloads of nearly 400 episodes. Just good shit!
They didn't even miss a week when one of their regulars passed away. Amazing what they've done. Highly recommended.

(14,732 posts)There is something so ingrained, inborn, embedded in our society that I feel this will never change. This keeps me from supporting our female candidates. I cannot let the hateful attitude in the US toward women betray me again.
