History of Feminism
Related: About this forumImagine what it's like
to be a Catholic woman of color and feminist on DU right now. I wonder if we even have any? Imagine being attacked along every axis of your identity. As much guff as feminists get on this site, the anti-Catholic bigotry is even thicker. What have we become?
Sorry about whining about DU. I had to do it somewhere. I will self delete if I must.

(41,998 posts)From what I've seen, despite careful explanations of Catholics who support Gay rights, who are pro-choice, who are working within their church and their faith for change, because faith and love of your church is nothing you can just turn off,--it's an intrinsic part of the human condition--none of this is listened to. It is not required in the Catholic faith to agree with all its doctrine.
If I were religious, I'd be Catholic. (Actually I'm baptized Catholic) I'm not--quite the opposite--and I'm not going to shun my daughter and her family because they are. Instead we find points of commonality, usually involving human rights, and things like charity and kindness and love of one another.
And Catholicism, in the form of nuns, Women anchorites, and Saints have always recognized the power of women in Jesus's ministry. I think if politics hadn't co-opted the Catholic faith so early we'd have seen women priests from the beginning.
No I don't like many things about the church. With me though, all churches are more or less the same. (except for hate groups) Catholics don't need to be singled out. I see good signs in this new pope; Catholic doctrine won't be pro-choice in my lifetime, but they just might stop being anti-gay.
I don't see women priests happening either, but he Nuns have their own kinds of ministry.
The church WILL change eventually in the right direction, but is ancient and slow.

(41,998 posts)That wouldn't fly here if it were said about Moslems or Hindus or Buddhists. (the Buddha had some unkind teachings about women, Hindus do as well)

(53,041 posts)was when a member accused me of not caring about "misogynism" when I mentioned the fact that the Catholic Church was the biggest non-governmental provider of services to the poor in the US.

(41,998 posts)My daughters Parrish has a large Hispanic community, and no not all of them documented--but that doesn't matter when helping people who are trying so hard. Right now she is working to start an affordable daycare connected to the Church, which in turn allows people to work without worrying about their children, or how much it costs. She is also into providing good nutritional information, how to live better with less money, as well as promoting 'leaving a smaller footprint" ecologically wise.
She'll eventual put all this in a book. I mean, the woman knows to make her own Landry and dishwasher soap. Crazy.
