Yahoo Doubles Maternity Leave for Employees

Two months after Yahoo restricted employees' work-from-home option, it is giving its workers another perk: more paid leave for new parents.

Yahoo is doubling the amount of paid leave time that new mothers are eligible to take, from eight weeks to 16 weeks, and letting new fathers take eight weeks of paid leave, as first reported by NBC Bay Area. That puts Yahoo more in line with other Silicon Valley companies like Google, which offers 22 weeks of paid maternity leave and seven weeks of paid maternity leave, and Facebook, which gives four months of paid leave to both new mothers and new fathers.

"Over the last several months, we’ve introduced new benefits like free food to make Yahoos’ days easier, new smartphones to encourage innovation, and updated computers to speed productivity," Yahoo said in a statement to Mashable, confirming the report. "Recently, we rolled out some new and improved benefits to support the happiness and well-being of Yahoos and their families."

In addition to the extra paid leave for new parents, Yahoo told Mashable that it will offer "Yahoo-branded gifts" for new children (and for new pets), and it will reimburse employees for up to $500 worth of "daily habits," like laundry, house-cleaning and child care.

There should be adequate maternity AND paternity leave ala California. My daughter and SIL used California laws (and decent Job Benefits) so that my granddaughter had a constant parental presence for the first six months.
