History of Feminism
Related: About this forum'Feminists are Sexist'
What this is really about is men accusing feminists of sexism and hypocrisy unless they can prove that they spend exactly half of their time, energy, and resources on campaigning on behalf of men. What this is really about is that if feminism only improves the lives of women, it has no value or importance. What this is really about is that feminism only has value if it works on behalf of men and improves the lives of men. What this is really about is anti-feminist men being threatened by women working for women. What they're really saying is that to talk about women, to focus on women, to point out that something affects women badly; all of this is of no importance or value. It's classic, really - because men are not always the focus of attention of feminism, these anti-feminists can't stand it.
What this is about is that some men can't stand not being the centre of attention.
I'm sick to the back teeth, sick and tired, of feminists being accused of sexism and hypocrisy unless we spend exactly half of our time and resources pointing out every instance of how 'patriarchy hurts men too'. Gay rights activists aren't expected to spend half their time campaigning for heterosexuals. Anti-racism activists aren't expected to spend ages campaigning on behalf of white people. Yet its a different story with feminism, isn't it? The most infuriating thing about this is that - as regular readers will know - I do think that feminism is important for men as well as women and I encourage both men and women to critique mainstream masculinity as well as femininity. But that doesn't mean that I think that every single instance of feminist activism has to be prefaced with a disclaimer about how this also benefits men. Frankly, I'm getting a little bored of it. I believe it strongly, but there's only so many times I am forced to repeat it before it gets a little wearing and I start to wonder why I have to keep doing it in the first place.
Yet sadly, this "improving women's lives is sexist" attitude reflects part of the wider mainstream fear of feminism. It's why people say things like 'I'm not a feminist, I'm a humanist' or 'I'm not a feminist, I'm in favour of human rights'. It's because there is a stigma attached to any activism that unashamedly benefits women, as a social group. It's not seen as worthy enough, and fighting on behalf of women as a group is embarassing somehow. I'm just talking about plain, uncontroversial activism that improves the lives of women.

Ten years. Ten years ago that was written, and women are still bothering to waste time and energy trying to appease those whose goals are to silence, distract and derail.
Trolls should be mocked, insulted, dismissed, ignored, etc. Engaging with them as if they were acting in good faith / actually interested in progress is a mistake.

(1,406 posts)They have the wrong perception. Believing that your advocation somehow will diminish their rights, that is there limited supply of rights and that the only way Women will realize theirs is to take away from someone else. This is the same thinking that leads to too many people fighting for scraps at the econmic pie. As with money and peoples rights. There is enough of them for ALL in this country, and ALL deserve to realize these to the fullest extent.
The other wrong perception is people in power believe that it is their right and duty to mete out these Rights like table scraps to good little (insert your objectional title here) so not to upset the balance of influence and keep at bay the obvious CHAOS that would ensue.

It's similar to how people who are robbed are not chastised for looking wealthy & therefore being a target, but women who are raped are. The double standard is so pervasive even some women don't see it. I think if Hillary Clinton wins the presidency, the hatred expressed will surpass what they display toward Obama. There is an attitude that it's OK to berate women. Yesterday on Miss Representation's site (I think it was there), there was an article about how the media refers to women politicians appearance in ways they never would with men. We all know that, but it will be interesting when the president is a woman how far they (the media) will go. I suspect they will walk gently at first, but as they get more accustomed to having a woman in the office, they will fall to old ways & start commenting on what she wears, her hair, blah, blah, blah.
Your last paragraph is spot on.
Good to see you.

I'm a black female atheist so I get it. All the time. Even in the grocery store. Engaging in good faith in person can be scary. They try to intimidate you into doing what they want.
Women are the sexists, blacks are the racists, and atheists are persecuting Christians. I don't get it. I don't want to.

(29,047 posts)This may be true most of the time, but there are some who believe that men cannot be feminists since they aren't women. They can only be allies, the same way straight people can only be allies to the GBLT movement.
A couple of examples here on DU:

Again, the article is most likely true in most cases, but in some cases, the desire to avoid the label may be due to this other reason.
