"Porn Prof" Hugo Schwyzer Resigns in Disgrace from Pasadena City College
Gender Studies Prof and "self described male feminist" resigns following revelations he had sex with students. As bad as this story is, it does show that the once commonplace practice of male professors having sex with students has consequences. In this case, he was fired despite, it appears, having tenure.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Hugo Schwyzer, the embattled gender studies professor at Pasadena City College, has resigned from the school after nearly a month in administrative limbo.
What a long, strange trip it's been. (Full disclosure: Schwyzer contributed to HNN's Cliopatria blog way back in the mists of time of the mid-2000s.)
Schwyzer, 46, taught history and gender studies at Pasadena for twenty years and has frequently been in the media spotlight for his unorthodox behavior. His most recent brush with notoriety came after he invited popular male porn star James Deen to give a guest lecture to his Navigating Pornography class, which earned him the nickname “the porn prof.”
His dismissal came after a year of damaging revelations.
At the end of July, Schwyzer publicly melted down on Twitter, describing himself as an egomanical fraud who “had no business teaching feminism.” (Schwyzer received his B.A. from UC Berkeley and his PhD from UCLA.)
In addition to sleeping with his students – occasionally in his office on campus – as recently as 2011, Schwyzer was also exchanging sexts with a 27-year-old porn star. He also acknowledged that he used his class as an means to have sex with porn stars -- tweeting that he had fantasized about having public sex with Deen in his classroom -- and wrote that he was a hypocrite for writing an Atlantic article condemning age-disparate relationships while sleeping with a woman fourteen years his junior at the same time.
