...when she was younger and living in her home state of Rhode Island, it was this – being attractive – that was her chief ambition.

“I valued beauty above all,” she recalls. “That was what I strove to be. When I would meet an adult, and they would tell me I was pretty, I would prefer that than them telling me I was smart.”

Ms Sterling, 32, a resident of San Francisco, founded GoldieBlox to make sure other girls don’t fall into the same trap. The construction toy has caused something of a storm in the US since its launch in March last year, attracting funding from veterans of the toy industry, including Terry Langston, creator of Pictionary, and Maxine Clark, founder of Build-A-Bear. Their investments have helped to fuel expansion into Britain, where GoldieBlox has just gone on sale in John Lewis and on Amazon.
