Court allows Texas's tough new abortion regulations to take effect.

The order signed by Judges Jennifer Walker Elrod and Jerry E. Smith found that Texas officials were likely to ultimately win their appeal in defense of the law.

Judge Stephen A. Higginson dissented, arguing that the law should at least not be allowed to take effect in McAllen and El Paso, where access to abortion is especially low.

The provisions require abortion doctors to obtain admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and abortion facilities to meet the standards of hospital-style surgical centers.

They are part of a major law known as House Bill 2 that also banned abortions after 20 weeks and regulated abortion using a pill.

About half of 41 abortion clinics in operation before passage of the law already have closed.

This just makes me ill,so many feminist battles we thought were won are being are being struck down.Texas now has seven clinics that provide abortion services, they won't last long.

Edit to add link to The Lilith Fund ,a great group in Texas that helps low income women pay for their abortion.

when we(meaning the politicians we supported) started apologizing and making excuses for our pro-choice positions Our politicians felt they had to take "Abortion is icky" stances and reach out and court a voting block that they would never, ever in a million years get. So like so many other things, while "our side" was trying to change the subject and move on to other things, this type of shit was slowly but surely gaining ground because we wanted to change the subject and move on.

a woman may need an abortion instead of sticking with "it's none of our fucking business why a woman gets an abortion",we started losing the battle.

We started losing the issue when we started treating it as a moral rather than a medical one. Too many on our side pulled the "Well our goal should be to reduce the number of abortions" without taking the tactic they should have which was "O.k. then let's make sure there is free and easy access to birth control for everyone at all times. Instead we...(surprise, surprise) gave ground on that issue too and framed people's opposition to birth control as having to do with their religion rather than just being anti women having sex they don't approve of.

This is the same boat we're in or going to be in on any number of issues where we've idiotically tried to find "common ground" where there is none. This is just the first one where it's coming home to roost in such a pronounced way.

Until our actual representatives and politicians start proclaiming loudly, proudly, and without apology where we stand on issues like abortion and many others, we'll continue to lose ground if not just electorally then in the actual legislative process where these defeats are now taking place.
