Consider the "PayPal Mafia"

Among the early members of PayPal are pond scum, shown below.

Thiel and Musk, among others.
Full Stop.

I hesitated when I was asked to provide my email and phone number but I suppose one has to even with a regular credit card.

Many scams come disguised as PP. So do ones claiming to be LinkedIn, Docusign and Yahoo, which were hacked for email addresses and old passwords (which you all changed!!!). Also all the popular sites, but they were not hacked. The scammers are just shotgunning. Like, from places where I have no account, and never did, unlike those 3 above that I dropped for very good reason.

I couldn't say how to distinguish a PP real email from a scam other than looking at the reply/sender email address in full, if you're mail app lets you. More likely on desktop than mobile, where we're treated like dummies.

Hovering or holding down your finger/mouse might reveal the real address rather than the spoofed one. Hope so.

I can say more if you have a desktop email app, namely "show full headers " and "show message source" but that's detailed and I should find a well-written reference and send the link to it.

Sebeneland Eyters has canceled a money request

Canceled request details
Amount requested
$500.00 USD

Note from Sebeneland Eyters:

Suspicious transaction of $500 detected. If not done by you report to the PayPal fraud department at +1(888) 825 - 1141 to cancel.
Transaction ID
xxxxx (I delete it, just in case)
Transaction date
14 December 2022

Pay Now

=====

And, no, I am not going to call this number and I have no idea who Sebeneland Eyters is.

The address is from service@intl.paypal.com. Many scams have a gmail address..

My DU confirmation came form service@paypal.com and I hate to think that there is a connection..

Next year I will send a check. This year my star membership would have expired and I would miss on all the hearts that I distributed..

Never again will I open another PayPal account. That said yes you can use a credit card to renew membership, but still a very confusing transaction because it keeps mentioning PayPal.
