New here . . .

Well, the system says I posted ten messages and I get the signal honour of introducing myself. (::

Not much to say.

I have been following DU for quite some time, but only recently signed up to the forum.

I am fifty-two, married to my second wife for five years now (my first left me because I was diagnosed with epilepsy). I am a disabled Navy enlisted veteran of seventeen years service, a long-haired hippie atheist socialist who edits erotic Romance novels for a Canadian publisher (hence my computer is set for Imperial English).

I was elected to the Broadwater, Nebr. village board to fill out the term of a deceased member. As this county is the reddest in Nebraska, and I am the lone liberal, I have no idea why the village elected me. (Actually I do have some idea: since I moved here two years ago my wife and I have been throwing a lot of effort into the community, saving the post office, saving the public library, and participating in many community functions.)

My wife is about as conservative as I am liberal (except she is also an atheist); some of our conversations are epic. A few have been loud enough for our neighbours to participate. But politics do not get in the way of our relationship, despite her opinion that "the Right is right" and my opinion that "the Left is right and the Right is wrong." (::

I only have had one person here ask me how such a person as me could be patriotic. The question left me speechless: how could one who cares about the community and all around him -not- be patriotic?

I also occasionally get needled for not going to church (the village's Lutheran church is across the street from my house). The only time I was ever in the church was when I was investigating a break-in about 3:30 in the morning with my dog and a shotgun - the pastor thanked me for that. (I find it somewhat ironic that the town atheist is the one ensuring the safety of the church, but it is my neighbour and I don't want my neighbour to suffer break ins regardless of who they are. It turns out that someone was in the church late and left it unlocked and some of the lights on.)

The folk here started out very wary of us when we moved to town with "I heart Obamacare" and a "Freedom of religion means all religions and none" stickers on our car, but they have decided I am mostly harmless. (Our old car used to have liberal stickers on one side and conservative ones on the other, reflecting my wife's and my differing opinions. Our new car has none.)

We have all kinds of people here, and I think you'll find you fit right in. We have a big tent!

I am a very liberal CA Democrat, and I write poetry, including the erotic genre. I have a lot of fun. I've gotten a few pieces published which is the icing on the cake.

I hope you will explore all the different forums and groups; there are many and I'm sure you'll find something that intrigues you.

Welcome aboard!
