San Diego teacher given probation for bringing gun to school

A middle school English teacher in San Diego was sentenced Monday to three years probation and a gun safety class after pleading guilty to taking a gun and ammunition to campus.

Ned Carter Walker, 41, is the process of being fired, officials said. He has taught in the district since 2006. His lawyer said Walker brought the gun to protect his students.

Walker has been on administrative leave since being arrested in February as he walked to his classroom at Farb Middle School in the Tierrasanta neighborhood. He has been free on $50,000 bail.

1. Well if what the lawyer says is true...

I can understand why a teacher would be afraid for his students but that doesn't make it right to carry a firearm on campus without the school's knowledge. In short, his heart was in the right place but what he did was dangerously irresponsible.

are "responsible" until they're not. Background checks are meaningless for wannabe vigilantes (see Zimmerman), and more stringent regulations are required which include harsh penalties for this kind of anti-social behavior.

7. We're pretty much in agreement here.

Everyone is a law abiding citizen until they're not, doesn't matter what the crime is.
This teacher, however, will probably never teach again with this violation on his criminal record and his teaching license, which is probably going to be revoked. How much more punishment is required?

As far as more stringent regulations, I'm open to suggestions, things like universal background checks for EVERY firearms purchase, maybe something like Illinois has, a Firearms Owner Identification card, (FOID).
I would also be open to discussing registration as long as protections were put in place restricting the govt. from abusing it.

13. Gun control and gun rights supporters have been throwing barbs and accusations at

each other for years now with no discernible results so far, nothing but gridlock and bad feelings towards each other.
How is this helpful? I honestly try to reach out and have a meaningful conversation, and the first thing I get is an insult.

To whom? This is the Gun Control Reform Group, and I have absolutely no desire to have a "conversation" with anyone from the Gungeon -- meaningful, or otherwise. The dialog with gun owners like Gabby Giffords and her husband is both helpful and encouraging, because she is the forefront of a rapidly growing movement of sensible gun control, and I have donated heavily to her organization.

The years and years of the NRA and ALEC, and their right-wing proponents such as many who frequent the Gungeon, purchasing corrupt politicians to enact obscene CCW and SYG laws is coming to a close. There is nothing that you, or your Gungeon dweller extremist cohorts can do to stop the growing tide of opposition to the proliferation of lethal weapons in this country and the deaths and misery caused by too many guns in too many hands. Sensible and realistic gun control is coming, and it's coming faster than the "cold dead hands" NRA apologists can imagine.

So please spare me your "offer" to negotiate a solution as seen from a gun proponent's point-of-view. I'm not interested in any more NRA propaganda, or Gungeon talking points, and your side has nothing to offer but more misery and death while hiding behind the Second Amendment.

And I still think that there is room for sensible gun control laws that won't infringe on citizens 2A rights, unfortunately, there are people on both sides who aren't willing to compromise, that's why, as it stands, gun control is going nowhere at the moment, which is a damned shame, because for a while there, there was a real chance of a universal background check bill being passed, but demagogues from both sides of the spectrum got involved and, poof, there it went.

Not only did he violate state law, but he also violated school policy, he should be denied a teaching license nationwide, as far as working, as long as it's not in the education field.
