St. Louis archdiocese cancels speech by visionary who saw the Virigin Mary at Medjugorje

ST. LOUIS (RNS) To Roman Catholic officialdom, it’s unclear whether the Virgin Mary appeared to Ivan Dragicevic and five others 34 years ago in a Bosnian village.

What is clear is that Dragicevic won’t be appearing Wednesday to speak in St. Charles, as some had hoped.

Earlier this month, Archbishop Robert Carlson addressed a memo to priests and deacons in the archdiocese:

“I have received a request from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to remind everyone that they are not to participate in events that promote the so-called visionaries of Medjugorje and in particular Mr. Ivan Dragicevic.”

1. I visited Medjugorje in ca 1989 or 1990. One of the women visionaries spoke

with our group briefly. Most of the messages we heard were generalities - Pray for peace, etc.
Some saw "signs", such as the sun spinning. I am one who is not prone to spiritual revelations and experiences, therefore was not surprised that I did not have such an experience in Medjugorje.

However, my two sons went the following year - one did see the changes in the sun, the other did not.

My conclusion - I am of an open mind. Clearly some good came from the happenings in Medjugorje. People developed a deeper faith, in some cases; many returned to faith. The visionaries have become adults and most have married. How devout they remain is unknown to me.

I have not followed the course of the Medjugorje story for many years now.
