Nigeria: Army - Over 150 Boko Haram Insurgents, 15 Soldiers Killed in Borno

Abuja — The Nigerian Army has rebuffed claims by some online media websites that it lost over 40 soldiers, while 65 others were missing in a surprise ambush by Boko Haram insurgents at Kafiya Forest of Borno State.

In a statement issued yesterday, the army said during the incident, over 150 members of the sect were killed while 15 soldiers and one officer died in action, with nine others missing.

Unconfirmed report says at least 40 Nigerian soldiers were killed and 65 others are missing in an attack carried out by suspected members of the extremist group, Boko Haram in Borno state.

The casualty figure can be said to be one of the heaviest on a single attack since the declaration of the state of emergency by the president five months ago in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

A detachment of soldiers under the 134 Battalion of the 12 Brigade under the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) stationed in Kangarwa village in Kukawa local government, had conducted a reconnaissance to gather intelligence around the area, during which they established the presence of previously unnoticed Boko Haram camps.

Due to lack of communication, the troop ran into the terrorists without knowing that the aerial bombardment had been cancelled and they were caught unawares.

At least 87 people have been killed in an attack by Boko Haram militants in Nigeria's north-eastern Borno state, according to local officials.

Disguised in military uniforms, the militants set up checkpoints outside the town of Benisheik and shot dead those trying to flee, witnesses said.

They also razed dozens of buildings in Tuesday's attack.
