Despite his belief against killing, York's rational for his action was that someone
had to stop the guns by which so many American soldiers were being killed.

After the battle he gave his report to a Colonel.
The Colonel - "You mean to tell me that you did it to save lives?"
Corporal York - "Yessir. That was why."
The Colonel - "Well York, what you've just told me is the most extraordinary thing of all."

Insofar as ethics in war, Sergeant York exemplified them. And still did his duty.

Thank You BootinUp.

According to google:
Gary Cooper’s portrayal of Alvin C. York in the 1941 film Sergeant York is widely considered one of his career-defining roles. Cooper won the Academy Award for Best Actor by effectively capturing the real-life hero’s deep humility, moral conflict, and understated country charm.
