'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' flies back into theaters

James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise return to the silver screen on Sept. 15 and Sept. 18.

COLORADO, USA — The Starship Enterprise's first big-screen mission will return to movie theaters nationwide in celebration of its 40th anniversary.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture will play in theaters for two days only on Sunday, Sept. 15 and Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Starring the original Star Trek crew of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig and James Doohan, Star Trek: The Motion Picture first premiered in December 1979.

I saw it in the theater in '79. I was a big Trecker. It wasn't bad except for the really boring part of flying around and through the alien mass that housed V'ger.

Especially after the anticipation.

Wrath of Khan helped make up for it a few years later. Probably saved the franchise.

7. Star Trek: The Motionless Picture

Saw it the first time. I was nine.

At that time, 1979, nearly every sci-fi fan out there was eagerly awaiting The Empire Strikes Back. It was a good time to release science fiction. Alien came out that year, but I didn’t get to see that one until I was older.

So we waited in line for hours at the old Capri Theater in Charlotte, NC to see Jim Kirk chew up the scenery, etc etc. Those were the days.

And it wasn’t Star Wars! It might not even have been Star Trek. Kirk did no scenery-chewing. As a piece of intriguing science fiction, it succeeds. But... it was boring to nine-year-old me.

10. I was apparently one of the few who liked it at the time.

I wasn't a massive trekkie anyway. I'd seen every episode but was never a huge fan. Really liked the motion picture, though and I don't remember being bored at any time. I thought it was visually spectacular and had a genuinely interesting story to tell.
