(10,622 posts)Being self educated and still ravenous for truth and knowledge now as a much older man, I am of course still learning. Yet I would have loved to and benefited from an opportunity to go to college (after my rather easy but obligatory GED).
With tuition free college education, I could have done that and learned that simple differentiation much sooner.
The reason I quit HS so young even tho I was at the top of my class and had an average of 98.9 when I left, obviously had nothing to do with aptitude and everything to do with poverty, I had to quit to go to work to support myself (long story involving a drunk ass step-father and growing up poor even before I left).
I want so very, very much for the teenagers of today that are in the position I was in to have those opportunities I never had. I want every single impoverished or struggling middle class kid to have that opportunity if they want it, and I want them to have it without a lifelong cloud of debt over their heads that keeps them down, that keeps them impoverished even after acquiring great knowledge.
I want what kids in first world countries have that do in fact educate and take care of their people. Our nation would only grow much stronger if such a reasonable dream would become manifest.
Feel the burn, it can heal a dying second world oligarchy of a nation. Which unfortunately is the nation we have become.

(8,292 posts)Thanks to st. ronnie changing the pell grant qualifications, I lost out and didn't finish my bachelor's degree until I was 45. I had to get employed by a company that offered tuition reimbursement in order to do it. And had to work full time while I studied. Hardest years of my life but I got it done. Nobody can take that away from me and I try to remind those younger than me that it is that important too!

(6,440 posts)It wouldn't surprise me if they actually did try to tie Bernie's education policies into that. I'm not pushing a "we shouldn't nominate Bernie because the Republicans will call him a socialist" argument here, merely predicting one of their talking points.

(32,723 posts)They had this overwhelming urge to parrot their Hero and they considered it to be "teaching".
Glenn Beck took that to the next step with his blackboards. Some morans actually believed his show was a telecourse.

(14,594 posts)Bernie wants to create a generation of citizens who know how our republic works and who are capable of critical thought. That alone will buy us about 50 years of a strong middle class.
