Ever hear that saying "I've got one nerve left, and you're on it"?

Last edited Thu Mar 3, 2016, 10:45 AM - Edit history (1)

I dealt with yet another baseless attack against sanders supporters just a little bit ago, after seeing attack after attack after attack. It was my tipping point. I'm so done dealing with Hillary, her cronies, surrogates etc. Just done.

My funds are lower than I'd like them to be, but I think I'm going to make a $500 contribution to Bernie tonight... in part because I really really want Bernie to win...and in part as a sort of self-censure... I don't like that I let Hillary supporters push my buttons that much.

I also thought that might be a good mini-fundraiser idea: anytime you do something you really shouldn't, something you're tring to be better about, donate $5 dollars to Bernie... call it the "the last nerve" fundraiser or some such. Anyway, Thought I'd share my frustrations a little, along with a silver lining.

Go Bernie!!!

My personal pledge is to make a donation every time a certain poster, frequently on time-out here, posts a new thread bashing Bernie or complaining all of his supporters are racist assholes. The donations will have to be on the smallish side each, though, since this DUer publishes roughly a dozen of these OPs per day.

I used to be, but decided to let it stay expired when it ended last month. Between the bias of the owners that they make clear through heavy-handed actions, the extremely vitriolic anti-Bernie posts that are allowed to stay, and all the alert stalking of Bernie supporters (despite all their complaints I rarely see an undeserved hide on the other side but plenty of benign pro-Bernie posts hidden, and there's been evidence posted here before of how they coordinate those alerts and yet nothing is done about it), I frankly just don't feel comfortable identifying as a supporter of this site.

Don't get me wrong, I still appreciate its existence and frankly would pay for getting rid of the ads (no I won't use an ad blocker) and for the advanced search feature if I could do so without the star, but only strictly as a commercial transaction, and not as a "supporter". I just don't have it in me to identify that way anymore.

Fri Mar 4, 2016, 12:20 AM

Several popular/prominent Bernie supporters were banned from the site for behavior that Hillary supporters get away with all the time. One (I don't remember which) just pointed out that there existed a site where people were pledging "Bernie or Bust"... didn't even advocate for it, and still got banned.

Edit: here's an example from today... member since 2008, but doesn't post often and doesn't understand protected groups. The poor guy posts in Bernie group with a complaint about being banned from Hillary group, looking to commiserate and discuss a valid point (age bias in thinking "kids these days have it easy&quot . People explain about groups but also empathize (given the ban trigger finger of Hillary group hosts), some other people also express confusion about their bans for benign things. Poster gets Banned from the entire site as a "Troll", and post in Hillary group GLOATING about it is on the front page. With attempts to shame people too. And nobody can reply because it's Hillary group, and if you go and try to express yourself in Bernie group about it you'll probably get banned as a troll (I'm legitimately afraid about even making this post... fear is not an emotion I should be feeling when engaging in legitimate discussion is a protected group on this site). For the record, I am proud to be on that rec list -- not ashamed at all. And all the gloating on that thread (and the fake outrage, boy do I hate the fake outrage and the "support", trying to make themselves out as the victims in the situation just for having their behavior criticized) and the "troll" ban for the poor shy poster is exhibit A for why I can't consider myself a "supporter" of this site any longer.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/110763277

Edit2: And yet, ugly disgusting smears like this are allowed to stay http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1107&pid=60651

Edit3: Just went and read where gmoles had accidentally posted in Hillary group. And all I have to say is wow. There's 1 or 2 polite responses about protected groups, but the rest just basically ridicule him. Some pretty ugly and condescending stuff, like implying that he hasn't found a job because he's on his phone during interviews and BS like that (he'd said nothing to give that impression). I guess that's mild compared to the ugliness that often is in that group (like Edit2), but the fact that they then go and play victim when somebody goes to their own safe group to discuss it, and claim that the people actually discussing in the Bernie group should be ashamed... I don't even have words...

102. Perhaps we're talking about different things
Fri Mar 4, 2016, 02:36 AM
Mar 2016

When I talk about protected groups, I'm talking about the ones here on DU. For example this thread is in the "Bernie Sanders" group. My impression is that the hosts here are not nearly as ban-happy as the "Hillary Clinton" group, but it's still supposed to be a safe haven for Bernie supporters. So if you started trashing him you would probably get banned (from posting in this group). You can see what Forum or Group a post is in by looking near the top of the page below all the "Home", "Latest", etc. tabs.

There's really no such thing as "membership" in these groups, but you're not supposed to violate the Statement of Purpose for the group, and it's supposed to be sort of a "safe haven" (e.g. no criticizing Hillary in the Hillary group, etc.).

I think perhaps this needs to be better publicized on the site... you've been here longer than me and weren't clear on this. Problem is, the hosts of a certain group are especially touchy, and that's fine, but then when someone who was confused figures it out and takes the conversation elsewhere they act all put-upon and hurt (like the example I posted upthread).

I'm doing small increments so I can make them more often. Especially good for when some Hillary supporter pisses you off.

Kind of that whole straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back thing. A single comment is easy to blow off... but fifty.. a hundred or two...each baselessly attacking fellow with complete garbage... some of it bad enough to make a conservative flinch.

I am about at the end of my rope too, but cannot afford a large donation. It'll have to be small ones every month.

I think there might be a few more like this when Bernie wins. I am really shocked at
the campaign Hillary is running. It is really turning me off toward her.

I very much want Bernie to win, but I have been through too many elections, and been disappointed too many times, to take anything for granted. I know that we are all focused on the primaries now, but I am getting increasingly frightened at the thought of Trump being the Republican nominee. I fear that many people will vote for him just because they are sick of the unresponsiveness of both parties to most people's needs. So I think that we should all support our candidates without becoming uncivil to those who disagree with us. Neither side will persuade anyone by being hostile and derisive to that candidate's supporters.

I don't mean this as a criticism of your post. I too am disturbed by the tone of Hillary's campaign.

Please know there are plenty of good people who love you for who you are. May they be a balm for your last nerve.

Lol. I sure do. Better get, mom's pissed.

I can't afford to participate with that kind of donation, but I love the idea. Fuel the bern!
