Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumSo, here's the latest ploy:
"You have be a registered Democrat in order to vote for Bernie in the primaries."
No. You have to check your state's rules and the Democratic party's rules within that state. California, for example, is an open primary state. It's how we sometimes end up with two Democrats or two Republicans on the ballot. When I went to the Bernie thing here weekend before last one of the local Party Faithfuls announced that, a) California has a closed primary (it doesn't) and b) if you want to vote for Bernie in the primaries you have to register as a Democrat (incorrect for California).
I bring this up because Bernie has to be able to, and can, win over moderate Republicans, Independents and yes, even teaklanners who will chafe at being forced to re-register. If it's a closed primary state it's a moot point but I'm saying be sure you know the primary rules in your state in order to give accurate information to people you're trying to win over.

(32,864 posts)In California you need to be a Dem or DS (Decline to state) and you will be able to vote for Senator Sanders in the primary.

(8,209 posts)you can't vote for who you want unless you are registered the right way? I hope I misunderstand this. But it sounds fascist.

(14,733 posts)You 'change' your registration by telling them which ballot you want. You tell them the Party ballot you want, or an 'issues' ballot if you're not registered with a party running any candidates in that election. You still only get to vote for the candidates for a single party per primary election. I don't see how that's fascism.

(15,859 posts)and we have same-day registration which makes it super easy.

On the flip side, if you are registered Democrat, the only primary you can vote in is the Democratic primary.
It's old school.
In Vermont, you just register to vote, period. Then, you vote in any one primary you want.

(17,045 posts)...to find out if your state has open or closed primaries. My state has a closed primary so I am working to get folks to register as Democrats specifically to vote for Bernie in the primary.
I'm also working to promote Bernie to those who are already registered as Democrats.

(41,146 posts)callers, a few anyway. Also potentially tricky is Bernie's ability to get on various state ballots like NY, as in Gov. Cuomo et Mrs. Clinton, and KY where there are some intricacies.

(62,325 posts)Activists for Bernie will most likely tell potential voters what is required in their state, I would think that is going to be part of campaigning for Bernie.

so I'm kinda new to the party. This thread can serve as an introduction, a reminder and a resource. As for the pinned thread at the top of the page, mea culpa, I missed it. Hey, I turn 60 this year I'm getting addle-brained. That's today's excuse, anyway.
Edited to sound less snarky which was not at all my original intention.
