Especially on private homes, businesses, quango's (Quasi non governmental organizations) and some government buildings.

"Do the people who display all these flags not know that they are Americans? Or do they constantly have to remind themselves?"

I'm in Paris once a week for work (will be there in half an hour, in fact). Life ain't cheap there. Many people commute as long to jobs in the city as they do in New York, London or Tokyo.
