The Convention this year versus 1968
I encourage all of us to go to the convention this year so that the establishment sees the faces of all those who support Bernie. I certainly will try my best to be there, but it is 800 miles away and the travails of travel are pretty much well behind me now.
I recall the 1968 convention and one thing about it and the violence seen there has most recently become remembered.
The masses outside the convention were populated by many anti-war protesters. The young men of that day had two choices, well three, really and the third was flee to Canada.
The choices facing the young men were to either go overseas and fight the Vietnamese people, or stay and fight the establishment who was sending them to Vietnam.
Some had come back from Vietnam and saw that violence on the streets as anti-war protesters was preferable to being in the maw of a war thousand of miles away. So they stayed home and fought.
Paraphrasing a bush era term, the idea was: fight them here so we don't have to go fight them over there.
Luckily, such is not the case these days. Luckily we have managed to not start another land war that would force possible BernieBros to have to enlist and go to war. And believe me, not having to go to a war overseas is a big motivator in many a young man's mind. That's one reason so many young men are drawn to Bernie: He is not a warmonger.
So, go to Philly and be not afraid of violence. 1968 was a whole different time.
This, a little birdie told me.
