Bernie Sanders

Last week Rachel revealed her ignorance of East Coast left wing culture circa 1970 on. She pronounced Goddard like the French filmmaker Godard.
She's obviously never heard of the place. A giveaway that this Smith Alum is out of touch - not just with the history of Goddard but of the whole era probably including Ben and Jerrys, a socially conscious business that grew out of the same scene in Central Vermont that produced Bernie in Burlington as well.
Bernie first got into politics hanging around Goddard.
quote from Motherjones article:
That October, Sanders showed up with a friend at the Goddard College library, for a Liberty Union meeting. (The school was a favorite lefty gathering spot, and its alumni include Mumia Abu-Jamal and the members of the band Phish.) It was a large crowd by the group's standardsmaybe 30 people. The party was struggling to field a candidate for the upcoming Senate special election. Sanders, with dark hair, thick black glasses, and his two-year-old son in his arms, stood up impulsively in a room full of strangers. "He said, 'I'll do itwhat do I have to do?'" Diamondstone recalls. (http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/05/young-bernie-sanders-liberty-union-vermont)
As any good hippie-leftie of the time knew Goddard College was a happening Vermont experimental collage. A breeding ground for the counterculture and radical politics. Steve McQueen rode his motorcycle over the presidents lawn there, students lived in teepees and tried new forms of living and learning, etc. And even today a whole lot of people, especially those in New England know the history of Goddard, but Rachel who lives in New England has no clue.
That told me why people like Rachel, and and so many Hillary supporters are so dismissive of Bernie. They don't know anything about his background, his historical context that is something to be proud of, and they don't know very much at all about experimental colleges and other radical ideas being explored in the US in that not so distant era.
That said tomorrow is Ben and Jerrys free scoup of ice cream day!!

(39,319 posts)I hope you have a Ben and Jerry's nearby. I do here in California so will go get my free scoop tomorrow, but it would be more fun to try the new Bernie flavor in Vermont.

(14,255 posts)about Bernie. Bernie was never meant to be seriously considered. When you are in the Clinton bag, that's it.
i believe the Clintons still feel that Bernie will step aside, hand us all over to Hillary, we will happily be herded into the Clinton chute, and we will just forget all of those rainbows and unicorns, and learn to love war. And keep giving her and DWS money.
I think Rachel (who I freely admit I never cared for, too shallowly and repetitiously and condescendingly abrasive) was easily snared by the money, power, insider thing, with the icing of First Woman President! She has no objectivity whatsoever.
As others have said, facts are not welcome, they interfere with The Plan. If Hillary gets the nomination, we all will be lifted out of Kissinger's "useless eaters" category until the GE. That's about it. If she wins, she will pivot to the Third Way neoliberal warhawk that she is, and there will be no interest in any input from the peasants. And the slashing of the safety nets will begin.
