In 1994, Hillary Clinton admitted Bill Clinton was being prevented from fighting for an actual (working) health care system by insurance company (pre-Internet-era) sockpuppetry

(12,540 posts)This crap sounds like something Fox News and the right wing would put out hoping some of this shit will stick. The lefties are pulling all the stings and pulling up garbage that is not worth owl shit. Never in my 60 years of voting have I ever seen crap like this ( on DU or any place) thrown at a fellow Democrat running for President by others, "supposedly," in the same party. God help the Democatic Party with members like these.

(4,667 posts)That may have actually been a cynical diversion from the real action.
How do you feel seeing that it was occurring at the same time as our country's right to have affordable health care was being taken away in a huge global back room deal that is still in force and still attacking public services globally.

(4,667 posts)This is "How the World Trade Organisation is Shaping Domestic Policies in Health Care" (UK but also applies to the US and other WTO members)
Note also that the Clinton Administration takes credit for starting the WTO.

(4,667 posts)Neither health plan was capable of addressing the needs of people with chronic illnesses, so basically both threw them under the bus - rather that subsidizing them (which is deprecated as trade distorting in WTO-GATS)
BTW Public higher education is also under attack- by GATS and its successor TISA, for similar reasons, globally.
the following is authoritative proof, look at the sources.

You can also learn a lot by searching the Indian WWW for information on Indias GATS accession, which just happened recently- We should have had a debate here in 1995, but we didndt- instead we were treated to a diversion.
Its a trade, we get privatized public services in other countries, which we can sell insurance to or expensive drugs to (public healthcare is hated because it lowers prices by having strong bargaining power)
Google "national Treatment" and "Most favored Nation" -GATS trade of Mode Four for Mode Three- establish a presence in as if we were local- they get access to our services markets (starting with government procurement but its likely it will not be limited to that) if they can be the winning low bidders. Which is likely because of the low wages they pay. See http://siteresources.worldbank.org/INTRANETTRADE/Resources/C13.pdf and http://www.cuts-geneva.org/pacteac/images/Documents/EAC%20Forum/Forum17/EAC%20Geneva%20Forum-%20WTO%20Note%2017.pdf
here are the four modes of services trade..

the scope of GATS is very wide- and almost no services are exempt-

Since 1998 they have ben forcing financial deregulation using the same deal, this has been a huge mistake that has already cost US taxpayers TRILLIONS of dollars! (Now they want MORE)
