There will be a special election on April 19th for the vacant seat of Dean Skelos, the former Majority Leader of the NY State Senate arrested on corruption charges. The district is on the South Coast of Long Island and includes the cities of Rockville Centre, Oceanside, Woodmere and Valley Stream.
Todd Kaminsky is the Democratic candidate here and it is ABSOLUTELY VITAL that all Democratic voters in that district vote for him. If Kaminsky wins, Democrats will retake the NY State Senate (assuming the renegade Independent Democratic Caucus and Simcha Felder switch sides from the Republican caucus). Note that there will be TWO separate ballots, one for the presidential primary and one for the special election. Under NO circumstances should you vote for the Green Party candidate. DO NOT LEAVE THE POLLING PLACE UNTIL YOU HAVE VOTED FOR BOTH THE STATE SENATE AND THE PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY! GOTV!

(11,175 posts)1. Note that this is not a primary. All registered voters are eligible.
There've been several threads on DU about New York's absurdly early deadline for changing party registration to participate in the (closed) primary. Registered voters who aren't affiliated with a party had to change their registration by last October to vote for Clinton or Sanders (or to vote for their choice from the clown car). That doesn't apply to the special election for State Senate, though. It isn't a primary. It's an election to fill the seat for the remainder of Skelos's term.
This is why, as leftcoastmountains said, there will be two separate ballots. Unaffiliated voters will be denied the ballot for the primary but can still vote in the special election.
