...a mix of "old money" (lots and lots and lots of old money) mixed in with a hippie / stoner / slacker vibe. A lot of trust fund kiddies. As part of the cluster of Atherton (one of the wealthiest towns in the entire united states), Menlo Park and Palo Alto, I remember a surreal "melting pot" phenomenon when I attended Menlo-Atherton high school in the 70s. It's not "diversity" at all if you look at diversity as a blend. It's "diversity" in that the quadrants are pretty sharply divided, and everyone does their own thing. For the most part, they peacefully co-exist, but it's more like they tolerate each other rather than any kind of a "I am yours, you are mine, we are what we are" grouphug dynamic.

I left California in late 2012, I have no idea what Silicon Valley is like now (other than over-crowded and obscenely expensive).

I had a similar feeling when I lived in Colorado Springs for 9 months in 2014-2015. You have a large Military population there, a large, older, conservative segment, and a LOT of white dudes in dreadlocks and tye-dye t-shirts and rainbow knit caps walking around with dilated pupils. More of those dudes than you could possibly imagine. On street corners downtown, singing completely off-tune Dylan and Dead songs while they strum an out of tune guitar and motion toward their empty guitar case for spare change.

But my guess is that the Sanders rally will be a mini-Woodstock for the Stanford crowd. I would expect a turnout that matches or exceeds yesterday's capacity overflow in Oakland.
