USD 501, Kansas Democratic Party officials gear up for Bernie Sanders
Excerpt:
Scanlon said two journalism students each from Topeka High, Topeka West and Highland Park high schools will be allowed in the press pit to cover Sanders address in the Topeka High gymnasium. The venue, nicknamed the dungeon, will hold about 4,000 people.
Heather Hooper, journalism teacher at Topeka High, said her students are thrilled to death to be able to cover the event.
They think Bernie Sanders is a rock star, she said.
Scanlon said Sanders will address USD 501 high-schoolers and staff at a second event at 9 p.m. Saturday in Topeka Highs auditorium, which seats about 1,875 people. She said those in the auditorium will see a live streamed broadcast of Sanders speaking in the gymnasium, then Sanders will enter the auditorium and speak to that audience for about 15 to 20 minutes.
Hes so excited about that, Scanlon said.
Shelbie Konkel, special projects director for the Kansas Democratic Party, said 750 tickets were made available to Topeka High students, 400 for Topeka West students, 250 for Highland Park students and 50 for Hope Street Academy students. She said the rest would be made available to staff. All tickets, she said, would be distributed at the schools by administrators on a first-come, first-served basis.

As a high school English teacher, I never thought I would be running for office, but after being inspired and invigorated by the Bernie Sanders campaign, Ive realized that I have to do everything I can to stand against policies that benefit a select few at the expense of the working class, according to Costillas campaign website.
