BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Paying for college is a major challenge for most families but figuring that out can be key to getting kids to commit to continuing their studies after high school.

Sen. Bernie Sanders is set to host a series of college fairs in Vermont for high school students and their parents to learn more about educational opportunities here in Vermont and the resources available to help pay for them.

The subject is close to the senator's heart because both he and his brother were the first people in their family to go to college.

"Vermont does quite well for the percentage of our young people who graduate high school. We do pretty badly for the percentage of high school grads who go on to higher education-- two-year schools or four-year college. And what I want to do here is make the process easier, especially for families where mom and dad may not have gone to college," said Sanders, I-Vermont.

He says, nationally, median earnings for a worker with an associate's degree will be about $360,000 more over their career than the average earnings for a worker without one. And a four-year degree will earn you $1 million more.
